On the mainland, as you know its not uncommon for people to drive 30-60 minutes each way to work a job.
I've been looking at homes in Volcano Village, for many reasons, and I was told the home prices are less, because of the distance it is from Hilo.
I think its about a 30 minute drive ?
Basically, I was told that many locals dont like to go far from where they live for anything.
My questions or wonder is, what is the philosophy viewpoint in Hawaii, that many people choose to not want to travel far from their homes ? I understand, no one likes to spend an hour in a car for no reason, but, is there another reason I am unaware of ?

$3.35 Reg. last night at a Pilot in Cocoa ($3.40 in my area). What is the cheap price in Hilo currently? Even at these prices I rarely use my truck due to cost.
Weather permitting, I'll use one of my bikes at 50+ MPG. I do ride in misty type rain or intermittent rain often, which seems to be the most common type in Puna (exceptions of course). I'd like to think I could use the same routine in Puna.
Due to the rain belt you'd be passing through from Volcano to Hilo, I wonder how feasible that commute on a bike would be? You wouldn't have the protection of a big sport tourer or speed to keep you dry. You wouldn't have the speed (works best at 70+) for the big bike's fairing to create a dry air bubble and I don't think such big bikes would make much since or be much fun on the island roads.

Do the drive in the morning during the time you would make the commute WHEN SCHOOL IS IN SESSION. Then do it a few minutes before and as if you were running a few minutes late. That 30 minute drive might not be 30 minutes.
We live in OrchidLand. Usually it takes me 10-12 minutes to drive to the highschool from our house. In morning commuting traffic it can take up to 40 minutes. The drive into Hilo usually takes 30 minutes, in morning commute time it can take up to and even over an hour depending on what time you leave the house. The difference of 5 minutes can add 20 minutes to the commute!
The cost of gas is relative to how much you make. You will probably make less money here than in SoFlo.

volcano to hilo when driving the speed limit will take 45 minutes, you might be able to do it in 35 if you're speeding and not hitting any traffic, like at 3am. if you're behind a slow truck or school bus, or if there is construction work, then you're going to hit an hour drive time pretty easily. it is a nice drive, and not nearly as stressful as the keaau to pahoa commute on hwy 130
weather is highly variable from volcano to hilo. sometimes it's rainy in volcano, then you get down to the volcano dump and it starts to clear out. sometimes its rainy in hilo and starts to clear out once you make it to Royal Hawaiian Estates. really hard to say.
volcano is not the cheapest. the equation is not the farther you get away from hilo the cheaper it is. it's kind of like that, but once you start getting close to volcano it gets expensive again.
check out hawaiian acres, fern acres, eden roc, fern forest, royal hawaiian estates and mauna loa estates. those are all the subdivisions from lowest to highest going up hwy 11 from keeau to volcano. they are all on the south side (kilauea) of the road. you can also check out the few areas on the north side (mauna loa) side of the road such as north kulani and north glenwood.

GAS!
I live in Mt View and wanted to join a gym in Hilo ... until I figured out it would be $7-$8 roundtrip (fro my truck) each workout in gas alone ... not including membership fees...
Volcano Village is 2x farther, double that $$...
many in Puna except maybe down in HPP will have/need trucks and this doesnt help on gas at all, but is necessary for daily driving in much of Puna, and to see all the cool places (many are rural) on this Big Island ie Grensand Beach, Makalawena Beach (best pristine beach in state), old Hilo-Kona Rd, most of the Old Gov Rd. along the east side, many roads around upper Mauna Kea, getting into Waipio Valley, etc.

Volcano Village is just a bit under 4,000 elevation, and Hilo is basically sea level... the ride down hill is a coast, then the ride uphill you really use the gas up... but I guess it all = out in the end... aloha

Volcano is much cooler; mostly drier than 10 miles down the hill. Also the rush hour traffic out of Hilo is slow.
I know a gal who commuted an hour each way to work and savored that time with her own favorite music and peaceful time to herself. Attitude helps.
