These little drones sell for a couple g's, They would be perfect to fly over places like Geothermal and G.M.O papaya fields. They just cleared the top of green mountain completely so all can be seen from a distance. Now 4-corners, stanfords, yakuza, and much more can be under survailance with the use of these drones. Seems like night survailance would be more productive and less chance of other aviation in the air space. One of these drones may have been helpful with in the Kalapana community to detour car break-ins and missing people.

nice ones with a go pro can be had for 500 dollars.... never thought that in my life time I'd be incorporating them in my business..... and here we are - recieved my marching orders for 2014 the other day..... and - drones are on the top of the list.......

Funny how the futurists always seem to miss the important stuff - grin

my prediction: common place in 5 years..........

The future is now!

There are already several photographers on the Big Island using drones, here's a good example of the kind of images you can get:

So what about our privacy?
It's OK to fly them wherever?
I don't think so. We're all entitled to our privacy on our own properties.
I don't want some photographer taking pics of my property without permission.
What's next? If they are as cheap and available as posted above in this link, what's to stop thieves from scoping out our properties?

.410 shotgun / rock salt? teasing FAA says keep it in line of sight and under 400 feet

I imagine "drone napping" or third party control of offending drones not long out.....

if its on your property - its yours would be the legal call (unless it belongs to ormat or Helco - grin ..... then you'd need to send it home)

so do we set aside drone free zones? .... df-1?

A quadcopter is relatively expensive, about $800-$900 for the copter, $300 for a GoPro camera.
It takes a certain amount of practice and training to get them to fly where you want them to go.
As with any technology, there are bound to be responsible operators as well as those who are irresponsible.
I don't think you have to worry too much about thieves using one, due to the cost and skills required. Maybe the thieves in an "Oceans 14" movie - - to scout out a diamond heist. Then a pizza delivery to celebrate another big success.

Here's another quadcopter video by a professional Big Island photographer, lots of great east side footage from the air.
