Pure BS. Get some big spotlights, a half dozen flaggers and two cops. Work at night like every other road project on a busy artery anywhere else that I have ever seen... Something about county/state contracts in HI that reminds me of NJ!

Maybe road contractor for 130 needs to have a contract some what like the "carmageddon" contractor on the 405 in So Cal. They closed road about 11 PM on a Friday night and done by 7 AM on Monday morning. I believe their "Late" fee was going to be about $10K per min? The reopened the 405 1-2 hrs EARLY. Of course this was only the tear down portion but it was a huge bridge teardown.

I think Puna is heading for a quality of life catastrophe if they don't start fixing the infrastructure problems and or slow down growth, and do some actual urban planning

Agree 100%, but too subjective: define "quality" and "heading for", and take the existing anti-growth plans into account.

It must be fine the way it is, because people keep moving here and voting for more of it.

I think I got home just after 7:00PM or so. There was still a lineup getting out of Keaau towards the high school, but it was at least moving.

What time did you have to drive through it a second time, Jon? I'm seriously considering changing my work schedule (an option not open to most I suspect) but am not sure when the traffic jam starts to clear out right now. I imagine it's quite late.

I guess you don't realize that it rains every night in Pahoa, try digging holes, compacting road material and pave asphalt at night, some guys just have all the answers

I drove through at 5:15 this evening (Thur) - - and sailed right through the merge at transfer station. No backup anywhere from Hilo to Paradise Park.

HOTPE - pretty much demonstrates it's the actual work being done in the rush hour that's the cause of the severe delays. I drove back to HPP from Hilo early today and drove back in later for a vet appointment (left Hilo about 4pm, back to Hilo leaving around 5:30pm). Fastest commutes I've had for a long time. There was no work being done during this period, most if not all the road crews had left. The backups also tend to be less on Thursdays and Fridays even if work crews are still there. Never been really sure why that is, but compared to Tuesday and Wednesday today was fantastic!

My guess...the mayor was flooded with calls for the two day disaster that resulted in about 80 feet of paved shoulder. I assume work was postponed until they get a schedule in place (hopefully announced ahead of time) that is a little more productive. But once it starts, full time, it's gonna be rough for a long time.

It makes me crazy when all the political sign wavers stand at the merge with the promise of fixing the mess and it never happens. Soon, by soon I mean 2 years or so, they will all be sign waving at the Shower Drive merge back up.
