SO it would seem with latency issue, that online gaming is a dream. Sucks, because playing PS4 with my friends is a way that I stay in contact with them now while they live back north.

There are ways to enjoy on-line gaming, but you may have to give up the convenience of at-home gaming, depending on the location you choose to live in (this is not a dilemma unique to Puna, the mainland area we last lived in did not have high-speed, DH work would have involved many fewer call-outs if there was!)

As can be expected, there are many on-line gamers on island (many of the university students game, including those that live off-campus). Some that cannot get high speed at home plan on-line gaming to in-town trips, some use friends connections,...

So the dream can live on... with planning...

If you like online gaming, or fast internet in general, pick an area with cable.
Parts of HPP have it, some other subdivisions too.

Retired military here, looking into Hawaiian acres because of elevation, precipitation and average lot size which is 3 acres how expensive would it be for me to fence all of that and prevent the wild pigs to be much of a nuisance?

And since it's the "wild west" up there ( I need some guns which I will get from the local gun shop with all the permits of course). I'm very much for respecting everyone's privacy and I want mine respected also plus helping out a neighbor in need sounds like good policy for everyone. Zero tolerance for criminals also will be living there year round. Is HA still a good choice for me?

Fencing cost depends on material, hired or self install, post installation (ok, that is one of the biggest here... drilling or jackhammering those holes if you have the hardest rock, blue rock, will add $$$ or PIA to the project) topo of lot (lots ups & downs vs fairly level. The average HA 3 acre lot has just over 2,000 linear feet, so ~200-250 posts (8' - 10' spacing) and fencing, barbed wire or electric tape (which must be kept clear of vegetation) along with the clearing of a fence swath on your side to install the fence along your property line...

Many of our friends here end up fencing only a portion, esp if they do not rip the lot pin to pin & can live with wild life in the unfenced area

Bearing in mind that the best planned fence can be breached by those that want access (not unheard of for pig hunters & others to cut pukas in fences, esp if they think they should be allowed in..)

It will be OK, as long as you realize that having zero tolerance for criminals does not mean they will not be around, and may be your neighbors ... and you may need to rely on keeping a positive relationship with your neighbors if you want to live in relative peace ... & your neighbors here are your most effective deterrent for negative criminal activity from bothering you

What do people do with these 3-acre lots? Is it just that they don't want neighbors too close by?
Looking after 1 acre is hard enough!

I think that's the funny part. They want privacy, but build as far back on the lot as they can, then become dismayed that the new neighbor behind them goes and does the same thing.

The other thing is that I believe most of these 3 acre spaghetti lot special owners end up giving up on the yard maintenance - just drive through any of these subdivisions and it becomes rather apparent.

The typical Hawaiian Acres lot is only 150' wide, so being far from neighbors may not happen, esp. if the houses are close by... Situating your house so that you are away from neighbors would only work if you owned a few adjacent lots, or the neighbors homes are already built & there is the spacing you would like between...

That said, HA is becoming a major award winning force in coffee production on island, along with ornamental and produce production.

I'm not trying to build a fortress of solitude here. Building the house near the center of the lot. I would like a nice wooded entryway with some solar/led sticks on the roadway (it all depends on the terrain). More space = More Canvas to design what you like [Smile]

The other gating factor: those who opt for grid power tend to put the house within 100' of the power line, because that's "included with standard install".

There are still roads in Hawaiian Acres without grid power; in any case, the SSPP fees are more than a small PV system.
