Comcast to merge with Time-Warner
#1
Comcast filed with the FCC to merge with Time-Warner Cable, meaning Oceanic along with it. It remains to be seen if a monopoly objection is filed. The merger is actually Comcast swallowing up Time-Warner Cable. Comcast already owns NBCUniversal which is NBC, NBC news and Universal Studios. Comcast does tend to upgrade their trunk lines with fiber, so there is a chance Oceanic will upgrade their lines, but not without a fee increase.

Comcast is horrible. I have them here because there is no other high speed option.

Horrendous customer service, almost as bad as AT&T

I agree. I had Comcast for several years in California. HORRIBLE service, Horrible billing. I knew several people who worked for Comcast and I heard a lot of horror stories. Its no wonder their service is so bad, if you treat your employees like crap they are not going to treat your customers well. I hope this take-over doesn't happen.

Yep, had comcrap. They are very anti server friendly. If you run bittorrent or any type of FTP server they frown on it. Even netflix and youtube server streaming service will result in throttling data. Comcast denies all this of course. What's next? Data caps?

At any rate, most people here won't care about it.

On the plus side, maybe they will roll out better routers, switches, clean up wiring or better yet go wireless and bring the big island back into the 21'st century. Time will tell.

It's kind of funny how almost all Americans chant the mantra "competition is good for the consumer" when the fundamental nature of capitalism is to eliminate competition. Even though pure communism is a failure, Marx got a lot of things right about capitalism leading to a class society with the bourgeois and the proletariat becoming more separated, the bourgeois being the 1% and the proletariat the 99%.

These telcomm mergers are getting bigger and bigger, with less and less competition the result. The telcomm corporations are also absorbing the content stream, that is, TV networks, TV news, TV entertainment and both TV and movie studios. It's like a giant net being closed, tighter and tighter. And like a fishing net, the end objective is less and less freedom. This isn't a done deal but it's probably going to be allowed by the government.

better yet go wireless

This is exactly what they plan to do -- all that pesky "pro-consumer regulation" is attached to the wiring; a wireless operator can do as they please with caps, overage, throttling...

By going wireless ... I mean since most of puna isn't wired yet. Maybe... just maybe they might offer a 300 gig month plan for a reasonable 50 bucks a month. Hmmm

I currently live here in MN and this merger is not good. I worked for Time Warner up here for a few years and was out on a work injury when the FCC stepped in to have Time Warner and Comcast settle their debts with each other and in the end what happened was they swapped areas with each other and up here became all Comcast with the mini cable companies around. When I finally got back to work it was all ran by Comcast and two weeks later they let me go because of the work injury. The thing I noticed when Comcast took over was their service and billing rates jumped. Paying your bill over the phone to an automated system they now charge you $5 more for doing it. Any service call you make they have a charge on it if it has nothing to do with their equipment. I use to have my phone and internet through them and they would charge me two modem rental fees even though the phone and internet were built into one modem. And when I canceled the phone they still charged for the phone modem rental. Now for the best part of Comcast's bullshyt. I moved out of my house while I was divorcing my ex and when she finaally moved out and I moved back in I had to get the service put into my name. The tech came out hooked up one of the rooms that the cable was disconnected to. He installed the phone/internet modem, a digital cable box, and a dvr. So when the first bill comes theres a $271 installation charge added to the bill. I flipped out on them and they tried to give me the run around but it took two months for me to get most of the installation charges removed. I was looking forward to my move to Hawaii til I found out I will have to deal with Cumcast out there now too. I never had an issue with Time Warner.

I'm not surprised that Comcast lobbied everyone the way it did -- but I'm disgusted by how cheap it was to "lobby" these senators.

Including Mazie Hirono. What awesome representation for our state! Hooray!
