Sheep fencing VS Piggies
#1
Hello,

Looking to allow a friend to fence in my land in exchange for Grazing of Sheep. Does a good fence and a herd of sheep keep away Pigs form your experience? We have a niiiiice yard with raised garden beds (fenced) Green house, orchard and tillapia pond. Piggie Heaven!!

I have some experience with both goats and sheep: the goats stripped the trees....even climbed them! The smaller experience I have with sheep leeds me to believe they are not as destructive as Goats. I seem them graze more cattle like, nibble here and there. Mostly I just want to keep pigs away, have a nice fenced piece of land, and help someone graze their critters. We'd both win! Any thoughts?

If you want the sheep to live the fence will have to be good enough to keep roaming dogs out because sheep are very attractive to predator type dogs. I would guess that would keep most pigs out as long as there were other food sources in the area. Good luck.

My sheep graze up more like goats do... So no plant or raised bed is safe from sheep. Also unless you have a really good fence or a dog living on the property you will likely get dogs trying to attack the sheep.

my experience is that hair sheep will eat alot of things, but that wool sheep seem to just graze. but neither are as destructive as goats. (still love my goaties). but yes, you need to cross fense away from your gardens. the fense needs to be tough with barbed wire on bottom to keep out pigs. with the cost of fencing sounds like a deal, unless your friend is thinking electric fence then i would veto the idea. since i am currently fencing the heavy class iii good fence runs about a dollar a foot for the roll. (not including labor, posts, barbed wire etc. just the fence)
