Yes, he had the courage to explain his opposition to the GMO ban. His stance is nuanced and reasonable. I prefer, personally to try and not consume GMO but I wonder if I am listening to my heart and ignoring my brain. Has GMO papaya done any harm? Greggor did not appear to be straddling the fence, more that he is reasonably trying to understand the issue and act responsibly. Aunty Emily, on the other hand had a different approach. No comprehension and yet a firm loud "NO." Loved her solution to solid waste on our side of the island. Haul it to Kona. There. All gone now.

It is no secret that Greggor is the man to beat. And he will not be beaten. HPP got him locked. Geothermal is a slippery machine with many moving parts to the argument. Greggor knows how to stay safe in discussion, but I truly feel that he is certainly in tune with what is going on. Two BIG issues: Safety is one. Cheap electricity is another -- which is somewhat of a misnomer given that current contracts already sell it to HELCO for cheap. It is HELCO who turns around and sells it for 6-8 times the amount they paid for it. HELCO is a major power (pun intended)holder with great political influence in how things run in Hawaii. Remember that they are a privately held company who is indebted to the shareholders, not the customer. It is never about cheap electricity in HELCO's eyes. Now just how is Greggor going to compete against that? Answer.....verrrrrrry carefully.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread with my previous geothermal/Helco message. Glad to hear the first candidate forum provided us with the first of what is to be many more insightful, humorous theater. I'm sure District 5 will be just as fun.

I went last night as well.
Peter gives a pretty good synopsis of the event.
I had a problem with the rude, sniping comments from the cackle club.
we had to tell people to please stop talking at least 4 times.
I never did get to ask my question about the evacuation route.
it seemed like all the rude, loud people got picked for their questions.
Very informative though.

Our first forum was VERY well attended. Yes, there were some glitches, but aren't there always?
Update:
David Paleka and Tim Law hves now RSVP'd for Council 5 forum next week. Still waiting for word from Cunningham, but if he doesn't show we will still have a menu of 6 candidates from which to choose.
State House: Gary Thomas has RSVP'd. Still waiting to hear from Julia Peleiholani. 5 confirmed so far.

Yes, I read the Tribune article.
That money has not been approved for allocation yet.
The evacuation route is going to be a HUGE problem for anyone who is driving to Hilo for work or school or anything else.
I was in a situation last month where Highway 130 was closed on a Sunday, and we where told to go up the Pohaku, 40th route or back to Ainaloa.
40th is practically a river bed.
Imagine if this would of happened on a Monday thru Friday, with school buses, etc. etc.
Pure chaos.
I left the forum on question 5 because I have to to work in the morning at 4:30 am, so I was not there for the evacuation question.

May I make a suggestion for next Thursdays debate. After attending Dist. 4's debate it became obvious that the audience question period can be a little emotional and time consuming.
With 6 to possibly 7 candidates for the Dist.5 debate, the audience question and answer session will take for ever unless there is a tight moderator control. This can be done by requesting all questions be submitted to you on a 3 x 5 card. This would allow you to consolidate duplicate questions and weed out the emotional ones. This will allow for concise questions on a variety of subjects and reduce the time it taks to ask the questions.

Thanks for the index card suggestion. We have done it that way in the past and I have been thinking about doing that again. Glad you agree with my assessment.
By the way, Gary Thomas has un-rsvp'd for the House 4 forum. Seems he had another engagement. I am still waiting to hear from Julia Peleiholani for that race. And I never heard from Cunningham for Council 5.
