This I have to respectfully disagree. Ahi at 3.99/lb here when the catches are big, and one time while in Burbank thought I would buy it for friends for dinner one night when i was there .... $17.99/lb and they said "fresh.... just flown in yesterday from Hilo, HI.".... I laughed so hard ... and bought steak instead.
Recently paid (while still stateside) 21.99 for Ahi fresh in Fort Lauderdale

Congrats O.S. glad you made it safely, difficulty aside.Glad also to hear of your good first impression, loud rooster aside.I truly hoped to beat you there.3 weeks and 2 days till july 8 so I am not far behind! Thanks for the share on the first impression,as much help as all the info I have gotten from all those punatics its a bit of a relief to hear a newbie post a positive initial review.Good luck on the house hunting remember after july 8 you can get some really good patch and paint, plaster, sheetrock, wood finishing work done at a very reasonable rate by yours truly.Again congrats on the move, cant wait to join you there in Puna.

Lots of good recipes for rooster online. My wife makes a really good French dish using red wine. People in Manhattan pay $75 for such a dish. But until you get over your thing about not killing and eating them, the full moon will be over soon and the crowing hours will be less.
Second all the comments about avocados. Our last harvest was several hundred (from one tree) and we couldn't give them all away. Make connections with lots of Aloha and you will never buy an avocado (and lots of other stuff) at a supermarket again.
Welcome to Puna.

Find the fish man on the side of the road near Luquin's. Just got enough fresh ahi to make four dinners for my wife and I for $10!

I leave boxes of our surplus avocadoes at the Laundromat in Pahoa, also outside the Natch on the picnic tables. They're not in season now, but when they are they go fast and people are so happy to get them if they don't have their own trees.

Man oh man! I am counting the days until I can make my move. I have a home squared away but have to wait another six months till I can move. My mother is up in Hamakua renting now. I am hearing so much good news from the island. I feel like I want to jump out of my skin waiting for the day when I can get the damn move over with.
Congrats Oneself! That beach with the surfers is where the warm pond is but you have to take a trail. Unless there is another surfing beach I don't know of. I think you were at Pohoiki which means you were at the right spot. You are now in the food basket of the state no reason to hit up the supermarket except for T.P. and paper towels.

Welcome to Puna. You were probably looking for the hot pond. It's by Pohoiki, the surf spot you found, just this side of it. Look for the chain link fence. Don't go into the hot pond if you have open cuts or sores. You could get a staff infection. I know about the Huge overwhelming desolate feeling. But the hugeness tends to shrink the longer you're here. That is until you go off and try to explore upcountry. Enjoy!
