To Mimosa--- you, in my book, are the most respected k#363;puna alive to me to date. If you would allow me to a personal meeting when my work is done here on the Mainland would be a great honor to me. Sure I am a a Haole by looks, and sometimes my "Mainland brainfarts" get in my way, but to this Scottish Portagee bastard who was adopted by an American Dutch family at birth, I know how one might feel about outsiders, as I always felt "outside" by my feelings and upbringing compared to my classmates and my surroundings.
I never have quite understood people who "shoebox" someone from their looks, and not take the time to see who they are. Or the ones who pretty much introduce themselves as "what can you do for me". I have learned to be self sufficient, respect your elders, say please and thank you, if you see someone broken down on the road you stop and offer help somehow, if you know of a neighbor who,is a bit "short", leave mystery baskets of food, etc. This is what Hawaii is to me and why I feel I belong alongside majestic people like Mimosa, respecting one another, and what the respected land gives back to us. Please keep teaching us Mimosa! ( and I don't mind da pidgin!!)

I dunno, I still feel that "Born here, not flown here" or "Maui built" FEELS condescending. It FEELS painful.

Everyone has an ego, id, superego etc. but if you feel hurt because someone else is proud your ego needs to be reigned in. I can relate to Mimosa's sentiments about his ancestors and his heritage. I am proud of mine as well. Our ancestors give us wisdom guidance in every moment about who we are and how we should move forward. I think it is egotistical to tell people how to speak when it comes to their own roots. We are all coming from different places with unique histories and this is all important if we are going to move towards a future of mutual appreciation. If you truly acknowledge and appreciate me as an individual, you must acknowledge that when you look at me you are looking at the product of my ancestors. If it was not for them I would not exist. Although I realize in the culture of the new world many cultures and knowledge of the ancestors is erased and left for dead. Much information is dismissed and forgotten because history is plowed over like a Walmart parking lot. We are equal but we all have different qualities and values to share. All those things are important and need to be acknowledged. I can't emphasize that enough..... Respect!

The main point of our post was to say,that never in our lives,in public,has any one ever said to our faces NOT to speak pidgen.
When we go anywhere in public,every one speaks pidgen here on island.
Only in this site were some upset and told us how to speak in words typo'd .
I am proud to be local,i am proud to be born on this island.I am proud to have reached into my 80s in age.I hope to be here till age 108,God willing.
Yes born here,but we have traveled the entire globe more than once,to many continents and countries and provinces and all 50 states,from one century into another.
We do not care if a person is pink,red or orange ,but we do take um bridge on actions,if they remotely harm our family or others.
We are all lucky to be on Hawaii the Island.
If some one does not like Maui Built logo,take it up with that company.If some one does not like that we are local or Hawaiian or Portuguese or popolo or even pink,orange or red,it will only cause disharmony in your heart.
Luckily we all are a happy people and get to live here and co exist.
So if some one is upset that my wife is born on maui and i am born on this island,just chill and accept us as your neighbors who lived here prior to many even being a sparkle in your own parents eyes.

Mimosa, you should start a history thread where you can talk story about the early days, the early 20th century on the Big Island. I'd love to hear stories about Maui from your wife too. People from all over the world would like to read about what you've both experienced in Hawaii for 80+ years.
I enjoy hearing people speak pidgen, but it's just too hard to read for most people, at least in any great length.
