McDonalds do have internet, so while you are enjoy the teri burger & coconut pie, you can surf!The park with the boat ramp is definitely Pohoiki... and it continues into Issac Hale..
The warm ponds & tidepools are NE of Pohoiki... If you going out (towards Pahoa) a curvy drive going in the opposite direction of Pohoiki, you were on "Mango" road (Pahoa-Pohoiki Rd is the real name hardly anyone uses
Looks like your rental has aome avos in the making, hiopefully you will get to enjoy those fruits!

We will come down your place you are renting and give you both some of our farm fresh this n thats.
We would also like to show you at some point,the short cuts through hilo so you can navigate quicker in and out of town,instead of just the main roads,and some sweet hidden beachs that are not very populated.
Maybe some local eateries if you like and places where you can get cases of gourmet food stuffs for a buck.
We know the house you stay,as some friends not many months ago had friends stay there as well.

More observations -
1- CASH is king. Unlike stateside where I never ever carried cash, here on the island it is a MUST. Farmers markets, road side stands, little places to eat, you need to have cash on you.
2- DMV, Post Office still suck. Guess some things you can't get away from.
3- I still hate roosters.
4- If something breaks, they may just have a part for you in town. A lot of people fix their stuff here, its just the way.
5- Farmers markets are bargains. They are a MUST, not a oh it would be cool to go type thing.
6- Police are unmarked. I don't like this, but I guess its just how it is here. They all drive unmarked normal all kine cars and trucks.
7- Thai Thai in Volcano has remarkably good Thai food. Pricey, but its hard to complain when it tastes that good.
Thats all I can come up with now, will keep posting as I learn !

Yeah, but still pretty obvious. I think I may have offended one when I flagged him down to ask about local traffic laws, him thinking he was all stealth and all. He was even plain clothes.

AHHH Hell yeah Thai Thai is really good. It is still americanish recipes but not quite mainland thai.It's like hawaiian thai. They do it really fresh and get the spices balanced out just right. I ate there when I was on the island last time and was pleasantly surprised. They also have some vietnamese recipes in there. The steak salad was great.
