Hawaii National Park license plates available

Out of my price range, but a good way to support a cause and replace a bureaucratic plate with artwork:

Hmm. Can't decide between

"because the volcano park needs more money"

or

"does this mean they'll count traffic fatalities inside the volcano park"

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just donate 18 dollars to the park ?

.. as an after thought you could buy bumper sticker blanks and print out a catchy slogan,
For cheaper than what they are asking.

"The total cost of the specialty plates is $35.50, with a $25 annual renewal fee. $18 from the purchase of each plate will go directly to the parks. Choose your volcano, and show your park pride!"

I think I might pay for the plates (they look great) if out of 35.5 dollars $18 went to the DMV or wherever it's going, the other $17:50 went to the parks and then the annual renewal fee also went to the parks. Otherwise, as alaskyn66 points out, you might as well just donate the 18 bucks in the first place. Why pay the state/government a renewal fee for a picture? Something's messed up here.

PS. How about a bumper sticker with the same picture and the slogan "I didn't pay the DMV for this"?

Good idea.

I think they'd make more money with a higher price up front, without the stinking annual renewal fee.

True, if it was a one-time fee I would consider it.

I wonder how many of those plates they'll have to sell to finally get the lights fixed in Thurston Lava Tube. You now need to bring your own flashlight to go through one of the park's main attractions, which hosted over 1.8 million visitors last year. The lights stopped working there about 4 months ago due to heavy rains but per the typically glacial pace of park improvements, they're still out. In spite of all the fee increases and fundraising efforts over the last few years I haven't noticed much in the way of improvement in their facilities, number of rangers around etc. Makes you wonder where all the money goes...

It's as if it's falling through the (lava) cracks.
