Candidate Eligibility
letters-regarding-a-proposed-pahoa-village-rezoning

Hilarious. The punchline is: most of these "allowable" uses would be impractical (if not impossible, within other overlapping regulations) for the lot size, and would therefore fail if expressed as a business plan.

It's similar to the outlandish claims that a "sustainability permit process" would automatically result in a geothermal-powered Walmart right on Kehene beach.

Drive to Hilo...

I'm curious where Alan McNarie is in all this. I like Alan and consider him a journalist where Tiffany is not. The friggin Charlotte Observer is carrying the story and Big Island Chronicle is not.
Assume the best and ask questions.

How can Alan cover Tiffanygate when Tiffany is writing his paycheck? I hear Alan saying he wants to write for an alt-news outlet. Good for him, admire the desire. But how many media outlets don't draw the line on "free rein to the editor" when the owner is the one under investigation?

I honestly thought Rob just pulled the name of an East coast newspaper out of thin air, so I was certainly surprised to see the above article!

I guess that having a smelly, noisy, can/bottle recycling business in the heart of Pahoa is a better use than a pleasant little skate shop.

From her own blog:

"Nevermind that these people with the skate shop have decided to park right next door to us, trying to cater to the same genre as our store — and trying to piggyback off our success by advertising on Native FM that they were moving next door to us."

This whole topic has nothing to do with campaign eligibility. It is a smear campaign !!!

The lady lives in district 5. She and her husband own several properties and I'm sure that the difference in property tax ix minimal !
It would be a big deal if they were claiming an exemption on all three. The property in Pahoa is still a house, it has an SUP for the business.

We have voting districts on this island for a reason. KathyH who doesn't live in district 5 is is trying to influence people to not vote for Tiffany as part of her vendetta !!

We might as well have no districts if this kind of unethical behavior is allowed !!!

Obie, it is, however, it is also part of "politics" today, unfortunately. This is a prime example of why people, who may be well suited (and qualified) for elected office, don't run.

I'd rather hear what makes a candidate "eligible" to serve as the voice of the people. What are the individual's values, what are the goals, a good record in life is always helpful (ie. community service, volunteering to help keiki and kupuna, etc.). Most important, is their message credible due to their personal integrity?

We shall see. Off topic, a little, on another thread I mentioned some believe Obama is "not eligible" to be the President of the USofA, due to his being born in Hawai'i, the "Kingdom of Hawai'i". Good Lord!

As perhaps an absurd analogy, who is really qualified and eligible these days? Certainly, some are sitting out "politics" due to this very situation. Auwe!

Thank God it's almost over. Then, on to the General election.

It's a response to Tiffany publicly opening her mouth about having a house in Hilo that she has claimed under oath is her residence when filing the exemption. She opened the can of worms herself. Don't accuse the people who picked up on her doing something shady.

It's not minimal because it's eight years and rental property gets taxed at a much higher rate. But what really gets me and I think others is that she responded to the question by saying she doesn't try to be "cognizant of the rules" that residents of our County need to follow to be financially honest with the County on taxes. And the alternative to that story is she's lying (on the public record) about knowing the exemption was still on there. Either way, does that make her a good County council candidate?

Obie, you're the one with a vendetta. You've been stalking my posts on this and a couple other websites for over three years, calling me names because of a stupid grudge you've been nursing that makes no sense. Get over it.

Obie, do you live in District 5? No? But you can opine all you want, only I can't?
Anyhow, districting is not intended to keep people in different districts from discussing local politics or candidates. That would be contrary to the First Amendment!

Districting residency rules seek to ensure that the actual votes come from people who live in the district. I'm sharing information and opinion, not pulling into the district with a van full of money trying to buy votes.

Tiffany is the one who didn't care enough about her own district's issues to vote in it until she became a candidate. She wanted to vote in the district where her family business was, which was not legal for her to do because not her residence.

Doesn't matter if it's a house. She doesn't live in it. Check your own sentence saying she lives in district 5. In the same paragraph you defend her voting in district 4 -- because she works in a business that was built as a house? Apparently you don't understand the concept of residency. Go back and look at the HRS statute posted here in the topic, and get a clue.

I have every right to talk about this political race. It is my First Amendment right. So maybe try acting like an American, Obie, and stop trying to suppress my participation.

The only thing you're doing in this topic is attacking forum posters. You won't even say your position on Tiffany. Because you opposed her. When I was supportive of Tiffany, you fought her. Now I've seen through her, and am not supportive, you are on the other side.

It would be really amusing if I suddenly switched my position and supported Tiffany, just to watch you fall over yourself attacking her so that you could still be in disagreement with me. [}Smile] But I won't. I can picture it though.

The Pahoa Village property is zoned commercial. As such, it is not a residence and cannot be claimed as a residence.
