It is authentic Mexican food from their region in Mexico.I agree and I like it.Most Mexican food in the US would be unrecognizable to most Mexicans.

Go to the PicknPull junkyard in Salt Lake City.There is a taco cart there that has great food.The restroom is a portapotty!
Much of my road to "older haolehood" has involved letting go of expectations. Some of us old 'uns were of the turn on and drop out persuasion and never quite got let back in after we hit the dreaded 30 something.
My parents wouldn't have eaten at Luquins. I have.
It can be fun to eat Mexican food that ignores all the advice about eating less fat and more veggies that's influenced food in the last 40 years I wouldn't do it regularly.
Oh, Also, I seen the food on peoples tables, if you think that is authentic Mexican, you have NEVER had authentic Mexican, rest assured. It looked like bad Tex-Mex, which in my book, is as bad as American Chinese Food. Its like the guy across the street at NY Pizza. If you ever had NY Pizza you would know, it is nothing at all like NY Pizza.
**Side note, Ive been told recently that roaches and huge rats have been seen in both. I didn't see either, but could tell both places were disgusting.

Whenever I hear stories about BIG roaches, or rats the size of Chihuahuas, they're always in Mexico, or New York City, or even China. So did you happen to hear how our vermin stack up? Or are our critters just a pale imitation to the real thing as well? (I've heard it would be hard to top a Manhattan sewer rat...)

I've eaten there more times than I'd admit, which is a lot. I've never gotten sick there.
The Luquin's family has been consistent, hard-working and honest for over 25 years now, cooking good food and contributing to the Pahoa community on many levels. Of course there will be bad days, but Luquin's is more reliable than almost any other business around. Try running an honest business in Pahoa town for decades, then throw stones. Try finding another business where the owner is actually cooking full time, and family is serving tables, working hard.
I'm glad KathyH won't be there when I dine. I can handle the mess, but constant bad vibes make me ill.

when I see all the bad PR coming out about Luquins I cant help but wonder if the anger and hatred is focused more on the fact that they arent sharing their parking lot anymore with other merchants, This due to the other stores down there not wanting to help maintain the parking area maintenance.
Been there quite a few times, food is always good. but its not any more unclean than any other place in town. Even Kaleo's which is the cleanest place still needs a deep cleaning.

That's cool; if they were my friends I'd defend them too.
I've heard the owners are great folks who give back to the community. Also think they've been very generous (too generous?) through the years for letting folks use their parking lot. And they obviously know how to run a business profitably having lasted this long in Pahoa. (Being in the high-risk restaurant business makes it even more impressive, so my hat's off to them.)
For the record I've never had a truly bad meal at Luquin's, and never once saw mouse-sh!t. (It was a kernel of brown rice, I swear!) Admittedly my opinion is based on a very small sampling...8 times maybe? In all cases the food was okay, not wonderful. The service was consistently slow and maybe once it was downright bad (hey, everyone has a bad day). But the price has always been right so one can argue that you get what you pay for. Maybe I'll give them another try one day, just gotta cure my germaphobia first.
I sincerely hope Luquin's continues to thrive. Standing in their shoes, I would want to hear honest customer feedback.
