What will we call this new independent state?

LavaLand. Flag would have lavalamp on it superimposed over regular Hawaii flag.

I think the Canadian flag is an excellent example of an appropriate flag. The substitution for the maple leaf is obvious but I'd make it green. The red vertical stripes are almost perfect but could be adjusted to a little more orangish red to better represent lava. The two stripes would represent the two parts of the split district.

Or the background becomes the orangish red lava color, the leaf remains green and the two stripes represent the two halves of the split district. The stripes also become green to represent jungle or black for lava fields,

Or even better yet, green leaf on redish orange field with two stripes on each side, one each of green and black.

The name is simple. N. Puna and S. Puna.

I could be confused but isn't the lava flowing mauka to makai and generally in a northerly direction, dividing Puna east and west?

from james weatherford:

"Have to confess that it was my wife, of course!, who coined that, and she says it is because,
"noho kakou (nei) I Ka Poli O Pele".
We think of it as in the embrace of Pele, with one arm Kalapana side and one arm Pahoa side."

i ka poli o pele is the most beautiful and sacred descript.
for those who have trouble with language....perhaps: pu la va na
