I remember watching movies in Akebono theater as a kid sitting on old matresses on the floor while the adults drank beer and ate pupus behind us. Ocationally there would be a rat run past the projector or across the screen, and it was no big deal. Times have changed. I was the newspaper boy from malolo st down to beach road on both the shores and beaches side, 150 papers tops. Aunty Nona used to tip me good every Christmas. The neighborhood was much better then.

There was a dentist in Pahoa, across 7-11. Wonderful old (yet young at heart) retired (yet ridiculously hard-working) Chinese-Hawaiian gent from Ka'a'awa (Oahu).
He only did dentistry on Tuesdays.
The rest of his time was spent building an enormous gorgeous sailboat (by hand) down in Opihikao.
The boat's name was Pueo, I believe...
....and the plan was to sail to Fiji ...with his dentist's chair aboard.
The sign outside Ed's office (in that little parking lot by L&L, the old Pahoa Chop Suey) read E. Ha.
Eeeee Ha!

Does anybody remember that little old (Pilopino?) tutu that used to walk from her little cabin near Nanawale with a corncob pipe or (more often) with a big hand-rolled stogie?

That was also before there was a bypass around Pahoa. ALL traffic going to the other side of Pahoa had to maneuver through the narrow little winding main street, especially past Cash N Carry which was always jammed. Lots of funky little shops since everyone had to drive directly in front of them, they didn't really have to do much advertising or be that nice, folks would stop in anyway. Pahoa was also at the end of a very long, narrow and very rough road, it wasn't all that quick and easy to get there.

The bypass was a cane field gone to cow pasture then, the cows were tied to a concrete block and would just lay there chewing cane all day long.

I was a kid back then but have been here since 1979. There was frequent happenings in Pahoa on a Friday or Saturday. I remember music and poetry readings. The Akebono area was the hub of that town. Everyone did have to drive through Pahoa slowly to get to lower lower Puna and there was always something entertaining to see. The area was reputed as the "armpit" of Puna but I've always been fond of that town. I'm going to miss it if it gets thoroughly covered.

South Puna might just go back to 1985.... I can live with that.

Its a matter of perspective. It already reminds me of the 80's and was one of the reasons I came here.
