Ana update 7:30am (actual one)
#1
Rough day for Ana yesterday. The CPHC says that shear was a contributor to lack of convection on the west and northwest sides of Ana during the last 24-36 hours. Since models, including the SHIPS intensity model, did not show this, and there was no mention of the source of the shear, I will assume that it was from the far eastern edge of the upper level low that brought us rain Monday. But I'm also assuming that it was not the only factor.

The environment around Ana is slightly moister than 24 hours ago, but not by much. So she will still be less efficient at converting sea surface heat into wind, having to fight dry air feeding her circulation.

For the first time in almost 48 hours, the center of convection is centered over the center of circulation. This is allow strengthening, I have no doubt about that.

In 18 hours she is forecast to be over waters that are a little cooler. That means her optimum window of intensification is occurring during the diurnal minimum (daytime over the ocean).

So we have 1 factor that contributes to strengthening. Relaxation of shear on the west side of the storm. And 2 factors helping to keep that in check. Dry air, and the warming of the upper atmosphere during the day. Given the current improving satellite presentation, and the SHIPS intensity model showing only modest strengthening, I'd split the difference and figure on moderate strengthening. Maybe a low end hurricane with the peak of intensity late Friday night.
Now the path... her weakened state allowed lower level winds to guide her west-southwest during the past 24 hours. This pushed her well south of yesterday's CPHC forecast points. So the new forecast points were adjusted south and west to account for her actual position. Given the improving structure, she may be done being steered by the low level winds. So she should turn progressively more northwestward as she strengthens.

Will she turn enough northwestward to place the east side of the island in danger again? VERY POSSIBLY! Just not likely at this point.
Now the rain... when she's west of us, we are in strong southerly flow. In Puna, that means rain and lots of it. Good thing we don't have rivers here Smile

In a nutshell... I've got plywood all ready for my windows. I've got water and gas for our generator. And I suggest you do the same. I don't think I'll need them this time, but this is a potential hurricane and it's close, so don't get fooled!

I will do updates as conditions warrant.

I don't see a delete button for older posts, sorry Sad

Hey, Harry, don't listen to "the criticizers". They were on my case for feeding my kids Tostinos Pizza. Thanks for the analysis.

Thanks for the information, Harry! You're much better than the weather channel, where they talk endlessly about the East Coast, then stand in front of the Big Island in the 10 seconds they give Hawaii.

You have to be signed in to delete, but also you can't delete a post that has replies. Oops, sorry!

Mahalo Harry. I for one am glad that you are a weather fan and that you share your knowledge and passion with us. It is a great resource, summarizing things simply for us.

I haven't followed all of the posts, but have seen some that are critical. I just don't get that with people, why they feel a need to do that. Ignore any of that negativity, and again, thank you!

Harry...great info.

May I suggest only posting to one topic, the "Hurricane Ana Updates" thread. Don't create a new topic each time you want to give us an update. Keeps the forum less cluttered and provides us with the same information. Each time you post to the "Hurricane Ana Updates" thread it will bring the topic to the top of the list and stay active.

Hope this helps.

Did you read the comments posted under Ana update 7:30 pm, why that will not work!

I am concerned about this storm, I for one do not to want to wade through the stupid nitpicking that seems to follow his posts!

If I listen to local radio, brief updates.
Honolulu TV weather tracker updates, computer freezes

harryd, Ana new topic updates, brilliant.[Smile]

I'm with hikatz on this one.

Appreciate the up-to-date storm topics harryd - also find it amusing how their placement affect the more retentive among us.

Good stuff!

I too like the new threads, not having to navigate thru old ones. I might suggest to add the date to the topic title, not just the time. For instance, I am seeing several topics titled by time only, i.e. 7:30 am update, 7:30 pm, 4:30 pm, etc. Knowing which day is being discussed at a glance would be helpful as this timeline of Ana progress. Thanks again, Harry.

Well it was annoying to read through this whole topic looking for an update today, only to find it was yesterday morning. So I bumped the most current update, and come back to find yesterday's update is at the top again.

Some of us really want an easy to find current update, so could we stop bumping this old one? As I said, putting day of the week in the subject header would help make it clear what is current.

I don't think there is anything anal-retentive about thinking it should be clear what is the latest hurricane update . It's kind of a big deal expecting a TS/hurricane.

Was posting same time as Kiana ..:
btw, you don't need to navigate all the way through for an update. You just hit the arrow in the last post window and it takes you to the first post you haven't already read. No repeat wading is necessary.
