Need New Doctor
#1
My husband had a doctor , who just closed his office with no notice, leaving my husband in bad shape.
Thank god for Puna Community Medical Center.
He went in there and they sent him right to emergency at Hilo Medical Center.
He ended up having major surgery.
He is left without a primary doctor.
He has HMAA insurance.
Anyone know of any doctors taking new patients.
We have no idea what to do when he leaves the hospital.

This was posted by Nani1970 in the event section by mistake. Did not to step on anybody's toes by moving th thread, but thought important due to medical issue.

We had the same problem. We had to go to Honokaa to find one.

I think HMSA publishes a list of the doctors that take their insurance, with specialties and whether they're taking new patients. It's probably online, too.

Thanks Tink, for moving my thread.
I did not know how to do it.
I was hoping people could give me actual recommendations for doctors
My husband will need a lot of care.
We went through the HMAA list the first time, and no one was actually taking new patients, but the one we got stuck with.
So much stress right now, I can barely think straight.

You could apply at Pahoa Family Health Center/Bay Clinic - at least until you find your own PCP. They do Family Practice. Or you could inquire through HMC's social service dept. to see if they can help.

Aloha Nani. I'm so sorry to hear about what you and your husband are going through right now.
My child went through a similar event this time last year, and I was out of my mind with worry so I have a good idea of what you're going through.
Caregiving is always demanding, especially when a loved one is the patient. Couple that with questionable/nonexistent post surgical medical care, a nightmare. I don't have a solution for you, but please know people care. Sending Aloha to you and yours, and hopes that a good Doc. avails him/herself to your needs.

Sorry to hear this Nani.
The HMC is supposed to give you a follow medical referral if you do not have a PCP. If they did not do this, make them do it now.

I found this out because I had to go to the ER and had also lost my PCP due to a practice closure, and the followup is how I ended up getting a new PCP. (Of course it might be in Hilo.)

The referral helps because it can get you in for followup only to a closed practice. At that time, there was no one taking new patients it seemed. Sometimes once a doctor sees you and sees you need continued care, he or she will relent and agree to take you.
