Hiking to Pohoiki? Think twice

My wife and I hiked from MacKenzie to Pohoiki and back today. It is a rugged, slow trek across the a'a. Bring water, wear sturdy hiking shoes, carry duct tape, wear sunblock and know your limits. No snorkeling or safe swimming. No safety net. You are on your own. We got back to our car at Mackenzie around 3:00, totally spent. We both planned on riding waves but waves was junk. Heard was good a few days ago. Long walk to find out.

Seems ironic that County would bother to build an emergency road to a dangerous location where people could suffer injury or death.

Eh? Hawai'i has safety nets? We have people jumping off the cliff down here at South Point every damn day. There's a beautiful snorkeling spot down there by what the locals call Broken Road, cuz of the broken road, and there's nothing resembling a safety net there. The tides can change at any moment and then all of a sudden the water is pushing you hard against the rocks. Hell, even Whittington which has a parking lot, bathrooms, showers, campsite, bbq pit, there's no lifeguard there, and while the water is shallow, the currents are tremendous.

Yeah duct-tape to repair the shredded shoes? Haven't been to the new Pohoiki yet. It's a shame there's no safe swimming. Why is that? Waves too big? No calm spots?
The South Point jump: Now there's a rush. Not sure I would do that again though. Good for a once over.

I called the mayors office again today(phone number 323 4442, please call every day) and asked again, whats going to happen on the 1 mile road to Issac Hale which is 2 miles in?
MRS ohara said the trail to the beach is now littered with garbage ,and you know human waste. It will become a serious health problem soon. Whats mr kim going to do with the 7 million dolars the state just gave him? Keep it in the bank of course. Or his he waiting for the next emergency? Please keep the pressure on Best you can.Also there was no public release about the pool going out for bid as Donna at the mayors office predicted 3 days ago. Aloha Dan HPP HPP

Does the new road being bulldozed in abut the trail? Can people walk on that when the dozer isn't working?

I think there needs to be some new funding (tax) between water and ocean safety on your list.
Assume the best and ask questions.

The funding is there. It's in the HFD budget. The Puna guards are already working in Hilo and will be transferred back to Pohoiki when the road is done. The towers are being stored at HPP.
The only added expense is the road (being done now) and a water tanker. The County is being reimbursed millions by the feds.

I did the hike last week. It's definitely very doable thanks to the volunteers that made the trail. Major props to them. It's lined with coconuts and white coral, so it's easy to follow. There are some hot spots still. You'll walk over them and feels like walking through a sauna. You can see at least three of the fissures/cinder cones in the distance, but I wasn't sure which ones they were. It took us one hour and ten minutes, 50 of those were over the lava, from MacKenzie to Pohohiki.
Definitely bring lots of water and excellent hiking shoes. Passed a couple dummies trying to walk in open-toed shoes and one person in slippers. They obviously did not make it very far. As we were hiking in, one girl was on her way back. With her dog. This poor dog could barely move. It's paws were all torn up and bleeding. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG. This was animal cruelty in my opinion. If you can't walk on a'a in barefeet, don't make your dog. |
