Traffic meltdown?
#11

Agreed. We made our decision blindly although it turned out to be right. We (my co-pilot) even checked Punaweb and nothing (yet when we checked at 2:45 pm) [Big Grin]

We got stuck just Pahoa side of the transfer station a little after 2:00 and did not move for almost 1 hour, but there were some cars and 2 ambulances Hilo bound every so often. We finally started moving close to 3:00 and when we got to the Shower intersection, there was a pickup Hilo bound in the middle with the driver's side front quarter thoroughly smashed in and hooked up to a tow truck. Did not see the other car. Seems like the problem was in the Pahoa-bound lane and the cops were only letting Hilo-bound traffic pass by.

Allen, that is true, as the blocked part was the Pahoa-bound lane. The right shoulder on our side seemed like it was clear, but I couldn't see past Pohaku so not sure. The second ambulance that showed up parked itself in the middle of our lane, also blocked by one of the vehicles. (That's where everyone's attention was, as it should have been.) I was impressed with the professionalism of the medics who arrived on the scene. I thought they did a pretty decent job of getting the scene cleared, considering there were serious injuries to both parties. (I was so impressed I took some video.)

"Lane", singular...

By nightfall, traffic was backed up all the way to Hilo.

From today's HTH:

We are No. 1 for having the worst roads and highways in the country. We are also No. 1 in having the highest government administration cost per mile on roads and highways in the country -- by far.

That stupid light at kamehameha schools needs to be reprogrammed to stay green longer for hwy 11 traffic.

stay green longer for hwy 11 traffic

It would, if people weren't so busy cutting through town so they could approach that intersection from the side.

We went through it also. We left Hilo about 3:30. We could see the highway to Mountain View/Volcano was backed up pretty heavy. We stayed on 130 and it was pretty bad. We turn off on Shower to get to our place in HPP.

How do you cut through town to get to that light? I'm referring to the light between Keaau and kurtistown.

That's just my blatant "geographical error" which "proves" that I don't live here.

There are, however, two ways to bypass the light in Kurtistown.
