L.A. Times> TMT breaks ground
#41
I have a feeling the unions are well aware of this project and have already counted the beans.
Assume the best and ask questions.

You are more than likely correct on that one Rob, but I would hope that the local union hall would open up apprenticeships to bolster the local hall instead of bringing in Union brothers from other islands or mainland.

Union apprenticeships are a good thing. I hope they will have some new openings as well.

This might answer questions about contractors and unions:

Pahoated,

"Let's see, the OCD guy thinks a Photoshop of a galaxy to be as bright as the moon [...]"

I respectfully ask you look at your own behaviour before making such a ridiculous claim. You are the one that has posted misinformation and uninformed crap about the TMT, ESO and the E-ELT, and when it comes to observational astronomy in general you simply haven't a clue. Even your last post had so many inaccuracies it's impossible to keep count, but I did enjoy the fact that you look at the pictures to come up with your nonsense (and, I see M1 and M2 in that picture, not one mirror, you can't even get that right).

PunaMauka2 is correct; wash, rinse and repeat. Post what you want but hopefully people here will know and understand this is a subject, one of many, you want to appear expert on but simply aren't up to the challenge of pulling it off.

One more Walter Mitty to cross off the list.

They're going to carry every single piece of the TMT up that Summit Rd?
This could take a while.

Looking forward to it, what a boost for the economy.

So now that the pretenders are out of the way, I'm curious about the impact the TMT using union workers might have. This is a topic with which I have little understanding and would like to see some opinions.

The link I posted earlier suggests that the TMT has signed up with local unions:

http://www.hawaiibusiness.com/thirty-met...s-economy/

There is something on the TMT website that says they're committed to hiring union workers for construction and also to hiring local people for operations in the future, but can't find it this evening - will try and find it tomorrow though.

Just curious about people's opinions in this specific case.

I would say to the (TMT) powers that be > Careful.

Example, all sensitive stuffs, need come up the road ... IMO, mo' betta hire independent.

Why get into drama ? if avoidable ?

foot off + my car is ready for strap on and <1mph

The jobs sound great, labor intensive at 13,000 ft. I have a few memories of being up on mauna kea as a young boy. Their use to be a pretty lake or large pond, it would freeze over at times. We would take our Morey boogie-boards and reach some very dangerous speeds down some of the steeper declines. One time I had forgot shades for my eyes, in less than one hour I had gotten so burnt that I could not open my eyes for a week. I know stupid haole learned one good lesson. We use to skip school on good snow days to enjoy the summit a bit before noon, then drive down to 69's for the afternoon. Not to many places in the world where you can enjoy both extremes.
We never have gone up to star gaze, can imagine it must be amazing. Really long drive to and from with the kids that we tend to go out to kalapana instead to star gaze. Looking up at the mountain these days it looks like a Disneyland has been built up there, how many observatories are up top?. Are their any restaurants for star dining?. Does that old lake up their have any fish and how deep is it? I remember it as being a light blue turquoise color years ago. Bet plenty more traffic goes up today than 30 years ago.
