Any food co-ops in the area? Or local produce barter/trading websites?
People post on craigslist and there is also a facebook site for this, but most of our trading / bartering happens with neighbors we met here. It doesn't take long to form a network. People contact us all the time (friends of friends etc). When we get a huge harvest of something that overwhelms us we give bags of whatever it is to the neighbors, and they do the same. Sometimes we will find a bag of food hanging on our gate and we have no idea who put it there. Last year our avocado tree gave us over 600 avocados. Not too long ago ALL our bananas ripened at the same time, even though we planted several different varieties to avoid it.

everything you asked for is reasonable, except you can get 6 acres for $30K (raw Ohia forest, upper Puna, far from lava)... and best to go offgrid and all you can do is water catchment... if you get a propane fridge, you wont need much solar set up overall.
depends on where you place your home on your lot as to how far your neighbours may be.. average 3 acres lots are 150' by 871' (Hawaiian Acres) ie similar to 3 football fields end to end...
10K gallon tank is overkill for a nonpermitted structure (cabin?) in wet upper Puna
...for all you asked about you will probably be in the Mt View area or higher up the hwy (Mt View has a good school)
please dont clear (strip) the land, leave the trees etc for the native birds, just cut a driveway and home pad and do the rest by hand IMO (cheaper too)
good luck, most of what you want is what I have... and it all (3 acres w/cabin w/solar) cost me the same as a new SUV ($50K)

Plenty of affordable lots or acreage in kaohe estates, Mr Wilcox always has good deals. Should be private for many years to come while having many important things like paved roads. It's a gated, patrolled, private subdivision that's tucked into a beautiful Ohia, guavie, staghorn forest. The now famous schools of Pahoa and Haas are close in distance while also providing a very good education for those who want to learn. Now is probably not the right time to buy, renting for a year or two may prove beneficial in many ways. Have a great Christmas and new year, hope your travels are safe. See ya soon at the tin shack.
