Police trap in Keaau
#1
Heads up.
Cops right after the 4 way stop in Keaau are pulling over everyone for minor infractions that carry harsh punishment!
Unjust punishment..
I haven't been pulled over for any reason in over 20 years.
I have used my cellphone for years without incident.
First infraction for cell phone while driving $297.000...choke
If I had known how much the fine is there's no way I would answer my phone
The amount of this fine is criminal.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

"The amount of this fine is criminal."

Unfortunately for you, so is distracted driving.

No it's not. Its categorized as a traffic INFRACTION. Not a crime.
The Fine IS criminal. It was less dangerous for me to be on the phone driving than the cops obstructing the roadway and stacking up cars on the shoulder. That was more distracting than the phone call.

Yesterday in the morning about 10am,same place, heading into Hilo town after the light,by shipman baseball park choke cops pulling over everyone and they have cops in unmarked cars up by kam school recording all.
So if you are doing 36mph going down hill around curve hill after kam school annoying light, you are breaking law.
Choke point through there so put down the cell phone and fix that back brake light - bulb for 2$ and no defective equipment ticket of $192 for a $2 bulb.if safety or registration stickers covered in dirt, mold moss mud or any kine, another defective equipment ticket and reason to pull you over.
If you turn onto upper kea'au road and use the shoulder to do so,another fine of 187$ so even though all kines traffic behind you,you have to stay in slow lane till turning.
Only illegal if you get caught.

How much times since you have cell phone you drive and text or talk while driving ? Now divide that number by the price of your ticket and you will come up with the average price per illegal use of your cell.
If you get 3 vehicular misdemeanor tickets in your life time,as any one knows, you are now a convicted felon in state of Hawaii.
You can thank Aiona Lingle admin for that rule.

There are some ways around this though by challenging it but you may need a lawyer to represent you .

Good luck.

Kimo,

I'm sorry you were caught, but in your opinion the fine is criminal whereas in my opinion distracted driving is criminal. I think we're even.

Fair enough Tom but truth be told. I wasn't distracted because I was talking on the phone.
I can also walk and chew gum at the same time.
I was joking with the cop. I said so what's next are we going to get busted for eating a cheeseburger while driving?

The second ticket for using cell while driving is 500$ and if happens third time,$1000 dollar fine, loss of license for a year,up to a year in county jail and do not collect your monopoly $200.A 3rd infraction for cell phone use while driving is also confiscate your ride and never give it back. Thanks Aiona and Lingle admin.
Brand new vehicles have cells built into the dash so you can have cell n talk and keep driving but by Federal Government rules now,all new and beyond 2015 vehicles have 85 computers that tell police insurance and gov't if you are drinking, burning a sweet one or going to fast and even what you talk about. All new vehicles are moving high tech comptrs and black boxes so they can know exactly what you are doing while inside your ride.
It is a now new federal law as they are watching you.
Patriot law.
