Police trap in Keaau
#41
"I'm going to come away from this with a more broad way of thinking about my bad habit and break it, cold turkey. The ultra stiff fine has definitely put an abrupt stop to my cell phone use. And if it prevents me from having an accident , I'll never know , that would be a good thing."

kimo wires, thank you for writing this, it's refreshing. Some folks love to be outraged and preach to others. Truth is, all of us are flawed human beings. Anyone who pretends they've never driven distracted is being dishonest or is lying to themselves. I appreciate and respect you for owning up to your mistakes and taking appropriate action.

Punalvr, you personally and many others. Look over the replies Kimo. Thanks for sharing but you deserve it. If it's the cost of the ticket that's going to make you change your ways then the ticket is very effective. I hope more and more people get these distracted driving tickets.

Yeah, young people are convinced that they can multitask and do everything as effectively as if they were doing each thing separately on its own.
Researchers have proven that they are completely wrong!
I'm guilty of the same misconception.
I think I can listen to an audiobook and play solitaire or mahjongg At the same time and keep it all together.
I end up letting a lot of the audiobook go by me.

The fine is supposed to hurt.
If it didn't, no one would worry about it.
It would simply be an occasional fee you paid for the right to talk on your cellphone while driving distractedly.
Suck it up and put your cellphone away and keep it put away while driving.

Every time I see someone talking on a cellphone while I'm driving, I'm tempted to ram my vehicle into them.
Then, I decide it isn't worth the cost.
You do the same.

Thanks Guys, I feel better today.
I really didn't expect any nice responses Thanks!
Some of you guys get it. Others don't. The "Glad you got caught." People...Whatever.
I just think punishments should fit the offenses.
The first infraction fine is excessive.
I'm not saying that I did nothing wrong. I know It's illegal. So does everyone else who is on a cell while driving.
I saw 3 people on the phone today while driving. And one girl if front of me texting on Hwy 11 this morning that was all over the road. My phone rang and I looked down at it...Sigh...Moving on.
I appreciate the positive responses. Aloha KW
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

Kimo W - We have a saying that we sometimes utilize in situations such as this and it goes something like this >>>>>>>

A person always pays for their education in one way or another.

In this instance your educational lesson was only $297.

much cheaper than a single credit at UH Hilo.

Sorry Kimo, I think the fine is too low. Should be $500+, a significant hit to the pocketbook. Too many folk don't have enough common sense, are lacking the awareness to realize that their driving abilities are compromised when talking on a cell. You are a perfect example, you still think you can drive just fine while on your cell. You can't, too many scientific studies tell us the results are unequivocal, you are a danger to others and yourself. You don't mess around when it comes to driving, it's too easy to be lethal. I have never once picked up a cell while driving, ever, I get it, I am aware.

Up the fine for those who think they have superhuman abilities.

sorry Kimo, looks like we will be burning you at the stake now after all your fingernails have been pulled out as an example against wayward fingertips murderously pressing on mobile devices. as an upstanding and responsible citizen i am glad to see you burn. no sympathy, you deserve it. but hey, glad to see you repented. great job. too bad. bye bye.

Civilized places adjust the fine so that the "hit" is proportional to the pocketbook.

$300 is lots of money in Puna, less so in Kona.
