SunRun - solar any input?
#11
we had the Sunrun rep come out and give us an estimate about a year ago. The visit/estimate was free.
She was very helpful and open, answered all our questions completely, and was very nice to boot.
As I recall, you can also buy the system from them instead of just leasing.

A friend had them install and has been happy, except he added a hot tub and is now paying Helco more money because it exceeds the capacity of the system.
Sunrun will only install panels to supply your current average bill plus 15%, so it might help to run your bill up for a few months if you're planning to go with them.

After the power outage following the hurricane, we decided we wanted a battery system instead of grid tie (like Sunrun installs). My brothers (one is an electrical engineer specializing in power conservation and the other does HVAC) say there is new battery technology that should be available in the next couple of years that is worth waiting for.

Don't lease. Sunrun will get all the tax credits and you'll be paying for 20 years. Get a loan, reap the tax credits and if your system is sized right it will pay for itself in 4-6 years.

For the right kind of HELOC, interest on the debt is also deductible.

It might take a couple years beyond that to become affordable and/or generally available; the electric car companies will probably lock down the first several production runs. Think of it as "one last lead-acid battery bank to tide me over" if you're building today and can't wait ...
