Windy?

So when your power goes out, do you report it to HELCO?

I didn't used to, but finally called one time after the power had been out all day. They said the power had been restored in my area hours earlier. I convinced them otherwise, and they got it back on an hour later. If only I'd called sooner...

Since then, I've called in more promptly. Often, they haven't known my area was out--apparently, I'm the only one in the neighborhood that calls--and HELCO respond fairly quickly.
Cool thing: HELCO calls back after they restore power, just to make sure it's working at the house of the person who reported the outage. Makes me feel special!

I tried calling. Busy signal.

If they had "trimmed" trees on a regular basis we wouldn't be in this pickle.

Proactive maintenance requires permission and incurs liability.

Emergency response is far, far easier.

According to Hawaii census.gov there's like 64,000 households on this island (prob more now) back in 2012, if the average electric bill was $200 a month. (Very rough estimate)
64,000*200=$12,800,000 a MONTH!
Or 12,800,000*12=$153,600,000 a year.
Crist they should have a little for preventative measures!!!!

Went to Pahoa this morning and things were hopping! Lots of people buying ice and gas. Crowded at 7 am.
We were lucky in HPP. Only 9 hours of outage here.
I used to really love the excitement of wind. Now it puts me on alert, survival mode. Izelle left her mark on me.
Not too fond of Albezias now either.
My thoughts go out to those still without "juice." I hope they fix it fast!

More frenzied than hopping. It looks like a lot of people that had elsewhere to go when the lava front was active are coming back, plus opening Puna back up for Section 8, on top of everybody else needing gas and food. Power is still out in wide areas but the roads are clear, everybody is out driving around. Saw 3 cars go through total red lights in Hilo, starting to jam up everywhere, as usual after storms.

haha section 8, yep... The usual most of the section 8 homes are rented again. Pretty funny to see the section 8 house a few lots down they have all kinds of money to buy race cars, jacked up trucks and 4 wheeler ATV/Dirt Bikes and power tools of all sorts... yet, for some reason they cannot afford to buy a 5K dollar lot. But somehow afford to pay for gas for all their rigs. Another day in paradise I guess. They even get a generators and gas to run them. Food Stamps and Free Housing!

Now I know why people by 5 lots in a row! Anyway, back to the small storm we had... A big albezia tree at the corner of Limu.. Took out everything but they managed to get the power back on before it went out subdivision wide. Altho, no internet. I highly doubt I'll have internet for a few weeks or so. You think helco is bad? Comcast is even worse.

Makes one seriously think of solar and satellite/cell for internet. I probably would have done it already, but I just bought 3 acres square 375x350 lot. Probably be moving up the hill soon.

Edit: $153,600,000 a year is pocket change for our wall street thugs!

Got power back at 2pm-ish today.

Yes we did invoke Iselle survival mode but did waffle on getting genny going... .and about 2 mins after we came down the hill with non-ethanol gas for it - power returned.

Fridge was still cold as I still had iselle/lava frozen 2 liters to put in it to act as a real "icebox".

Two meals at black rock just because I didnt feel like being a pioneer or BBQ'ing. Saw lots of people doing the same thing!

Note to self - get the cig lighter plug in coffee maker! I was not up for pulling everything out to make cowboy coffee.

PS gotta give kudos to ATT for having their act together. Had cell service the whole time even with loss of power!!! Way to go!
