We saw them Thursday afternoon on Kilauea ave. in Hilo. It appeared to be a retired couple operating the vehicle. A nice leisure gig I'd say. Soon we'll be able to click on the street view in google maps for the Big Island. It will be interesting to see just how many streets they actually drive out here.

Apple and Google are competitors so I doubt they are taking pictures for google maps. Apple is working on their own mapping apps that will be in direct competition with google maps and street view.

Apple is rumored to be working on their own self driving electric car. This is not a mapping car, although they may be collecting equivalent data.

There are probably good reasons why they are doing some testing on Hawaii island. One factor is quite a few iOS programmers out of UH and UHH. There are many, many high tech initiatives going on all around this island, and in our Hawaii island tradition, kept totally under wraps. The high technology community on this island has learned the lesson the hard way, keep things quiet or draw out the fruitcake science-illiterate hypochondria protest mobs, especially out of Puna.

BTW, auto autos means these jobs are going away in a few years: taxi driver, bus driver, truck driver, delivery driver.

If self-driving cars are looking to take over, they better be militarized, as they are going after the most common job in the nation. Or maybe they are interning at BK to diversify their resume for the local market?
