tom the center was closed in the AM but opened for a party in the afternoon.
barry , yes the great unwashed how right you are , sometimes the interior of the community center smells like an open garbage can. its a residual smell left behind by the great "unwashed" .the place is filthy inside, often smells terrible. I would also like to let the readers know that some of these poor "starving" are in and out of the fine hotel known as Hilo Jail , on a regular basis , working towards permanent residency in Halawa correctional . and finally one of the biggest , nasty gossipers gone . Ms. Glenda did more harm to this community in her time occupying the office gossiping true or not, to anyone and everyone that crossed her path , while chain smoking up the building .
Kala you may not be aware but , there are welfare subsidies for people to provide , coupons for taxi service , in some cases car insurance and I heard of one and one only a car with insurance was provided , all compliments of the generous taxpayer. and yes there gas is also part of their monthly stipend . besides an EBT card they get a debit card for their cash money.

Justthefacts here you go again with half truth there are a few people who gets some of the stuff you mention most of them are consider disable and cant work. the mass majority are like my 75 year old friend who gets $1OOO month in social sercuity and spends $400 a month on medicine H=he gets around $150 a month in food stamp. Time he pays electcity and keeps a car running He is pretty hungry by the end of the month.

Jrw at 75 your neighbor deserves what he gets. He's more than likely earned it. Possibly even fought for this country. I think that you are more than aware that we are not discussing this population of senior's or individuals who are truly disabled. I know many (some you may know as well) that are young strong and capable of caring for themselves that don't lift a finger. That feel its no big deal imposing on someone else to support them because they somehow precieve themselves as privileged and deserve the mana . If these individuals see a benifit in takeing over a community to meet their needs. Not a problem. Ipose on or intimidate others for what they want. Not a problem.......these are the people I am referring to and think you know it. Now try to imagine having neighbors like Barry all around you. And don't tell me to move. Been there.

jrw, there are subsidies for seniors in this situation HELCO offers a senior program , and there is one that will assist with medications. there are food banks for assistance with seniors, and there is also a "special" food program . free food at the community center did not have seniors lining up , it was young people , many from hilo . a lot of druggies sell there EBT money cards in exchange for drugs .
Kala , that's not the first time I heard "why work " when everything is free , that is how we as a country have gotten into such a welfare mess. go for it. I go to the community center for meeting and carry Clorox wipes for the chair.
