County defines a lesser "ag road" standard which is eligible for limited FTR (fill potholes, occasional grading, brush cutting, no pavement or other capital improvements).

County creates an LID for each subdivision at a rate high enough to bring that subdivision into compliance (paved roads, etc).

Subdivisions may opt-out with majority landowner vote to establish a posture of record which is a mandatory disclosure item on all future real estate transactions.

Thus, if a given subdivision likes their unpaved roads etc, they can keep it, provided that all current and potential future owners are fully aware of the situation.

All HOAs to be run by professional managers who DO NOT own land in that subdivision.

the first sounds good. i thought several of these estates were 'ag' zoned. it would make sense for that 'zoning' to include the extent of the road maintenance the county should be expected to do. i don't know what a LID is or what that sentence means. if the residents have to pay to bring the roads into compliance only the very rich will be able to live here. if we are expecting the county to pick up the tab they will go bankrupt instead, which is the very reason the roads are 'private' in the first place. i think the opt out idea would work as well. at least i can't see why not. the problem is that things change. even in the seven or so years i have been here things have changed. the volcano may change her mind again, anything could change. the situation in hawaiian acres is rather unique due to its voluntary nature. despite being the largest we are the sparsest and the association is probably the poorest. despite this people, good people, have volunteered their time so that a community center can exist.

While others work diligently to tear it down. It happens lots of places. The fight has worn me down.

yes,and i can see why Smile i have reasons to feel blessed. i have reasons to concentrate on today and not yesterday. i have gifts i can share. it would be churlish of me to allow the haters to squash all that Smile i AM volunteering. i WILL stick my neck on the line. i WILL speak for those that aren't able. i have nothing to gain, but i also have nothing to lose Smile whether or not you are a member of the association, you are a member of this community. we live in a society where the very word has lost its meaning. most people do not even know their immediate neighbors. this particular 'community' is large and sparse which complicates things. we live in an administration that defies logic. however this IS paradise. its about time we started coming together and behaving as if we recognize the honor of being able to live here. we all have a responsibility, to each other and to the land. we also have a responsibility to ourselves - to live the best life we can. In the short time I have been in the acres I have met and talked to more people than I would have in a year in a mainland suburb. Mostly people at the community center, but also hitchhikers and people driving or walking that stop to chat. It really is like a village, and I hope we can do more to network and help each other out. The community center is also a nice place with power, internet, and phone, for people that choose to live more simply at home, but might occasionally need such things.

How much do you think the Kuauli St. monolith weighs?

Maybe we could start a pool; everybody puts in $5 and guesses a weight. Use the money to raise the sign, and everybody wins!
