When I dropped my daughter off every day at Keaau High School she was embarrassed by the rusted out junker I was driving. But, it was all I could afford. All the other kids were getting out of much newer/nicer cars. The percentage of students those years getting free or reduced lunches (income based) was over 90%. We weren't one of them. I never checked to see if we qualified but I'm 99% sure we didn't (thank God). Some of the other students had no way to get to school so they hitchhiked/walked approximately 5 miles each way to get there and back EVERY DAY.
There is a big dichotomy here. Over 90% on free or reduced lunches, some of those parents could afford new cars and some of them couldn't afford any form of transportation to get their kids to school.
There are many layers to this problem.

Greed, a refuge for small minds. Focus on what you think is wrong with your world so you don't have to focus on what is wrong with you. It's time to put those "Libertarian" dreams away and stop complaining about feeding the hungry.
Here's the truth or where you tax money goes.

some of them couldn't afford any form of transportation to get their kids to school.
--------
Although parents in Hawaii are generally charged for their children to use the bus, most children who qualify for free lunches also qualify for free bus transportation. I remember the forms being distributed to every child, every new school year.
On a side note, the income limits on qualification for free or reduced price lunches and free bus transportation are surprisingly (to me anyway) high.

The debates about establishing our nations' public education would show that well over 100 years ago, the idea of public funded education was looked at as welfare by many, esp. those raised on privately funded education...
again, it is easy to see it in others, much harder to see it in our mirrors...
Education as it is now might be welfare, but education should be an investment.
I expect my children to carry on the torch, lead, and pass the torch to their children. We are where we are now because of previous generations giving the next the tools to succeed.
That is one of the biggest failings of the current generation, we are failing our kids and are actively sabotaging them. We are teaching them to take tests, not to think, explore and grow.

Welfare becomes less of a burden when more people are working and paying tax, and hence less people need to receive welfare.
To achieve this we need economic growth. To get that we need investment. For example, having someone build a $1,000,000,000 telescope
in your county.
But then we get people who protest against that for reasons that remain unclear. They then complain that there are no jobs for their kids and too many people on welfare.

Good point PaulW - When we see those men and women who protest on MK - we wonder how many have welfare obama phones , how many actually work and can afford to take off work to protest, how many are on welfare ,and on and on.
We noticed J.Albertini was arrested as well - he certainly is not hawaiian .
We wonder how many are on food stamps or collect our taxes to protest or collect free medical from workers like us who pay our taxes as required by law.
If a person is truly disabled,as in a wheel chair and perhaps can not function normally,we do not have any issues with supporting them if indeed they can not function.
But far to often we see moms with a whole slew of children driving brand new vehicles , wearing brand name clothing and using the EBT to buy ice cream, candy and soda along with chips and dips.
Being poor should be incentive enough to set a great example to the children they chose to have,to better themselves and not wait for that free money every month.
To answer your question Birchl - We do not allow our children to rely on welfare hand outs to get by,they work 2 jobs ,they go to school, and raise their children and are better for it.
We have never had our hands out for free food or free money.Sometimes we did not have enough to eat, sometimes we even walked or hitch hiked back and forth to work.but we made it work,we do not need welfare to live well.

It also doesn't help when the bottom 60% of workers pay less than 2% of all Income Tax Paid, and on a total income earned far higher than that. The way things are now 40% pay $0 in Income Tax, and 80% of those not only pay $0 in Income Tax, but get paid a "negative" tax by other taxpayers in the form of Tax Credits that exceed the normal Tax on their Income. The top 10% of earners pay virtually everything that is collected, so, yes, it would help if more people paid into the treasury, instead of relying only on the top earners to carry them, and the country/state, on their backs.

Absolutely.
All this socialist talk of the rich getting richer off the backs of the poor really irks me, since the it is that top 10% of earners who are the only ones paying taxes.

Yes, but the flea-bag media and scum-bag pols repeat the mantra of the rich not paying their fair share, while the sycophants repeat it like good little lemmings.
The only way the rich aren't paying their fair share, is by paying far MORE than their fair share.
Not only is it grossly unfair, it plays into the divide and conquer game, as well as putting a large majority into the position of voting themselves somebody else's hard-earned $$$ which some French guy noted would signal the end of Democracy in the America, and yes, it is even true in Puna.
