2015 Hurricane season is here!

If your main disconnect switch ( the 100, or 125 amp breaker) is isolated ( has conductors (wires) on both sides) you could run the transfer switch rated for same from the side that feeds your smaller circuits in a loop pattern from main disconnect to transfer to small circuits. The benefit of the transfer switch is that it assures that the main feeder is cut off completely before the generator power is applied so you do not have an over current problem and resulting meltdown and fire once the power on the HELCO side is restored.
Another way is to run the generator power thru 2 20 amp breakers, one on each side ( have to serve each buss bar for balanced load) on the opposite end of the panel from the main breaker, similar to a photovoltaic connection, with a "DANGER-read instructions on panel cover" by each 20 amp breaker.
Instructions would read as 20 amp breakers are an alternate power feed and main disconnect MUST be turned off before energizing panel with these breakers, reverse sequence once utility power is restored. Not following this sequence will result in possible electrocution and fire, or similar wording.
Then put a mark by the breakers as a reference to use (ie: fridge/freezer, one lighting circuit) for leaving marked breakers on, and turn off the rest of the breakers while using your emergency power.
Kind of a hassle, but if you know how to transfer power properly, it works. Prime key notes to take in any back feed by generator is make sure primary source of power, whether HELCO or generator, is turned off BEFORE introducing another power source, even if that power source is not producing power at that moment.

I have done the back-feeding with a suicide cord myself so I am not really in a position to preach. However, reformed smokers are often some of the most vocal about their anti-smoking views and so it may be with me. What you say is absolutely right in that it is possible to do this and avoid electrocuting anyone. The power company and your insurance company will always look at it from the perspective that it is STILL POSSIBLE TO ELECTROCUTE SOMEONE though. That's the only way they can see it.

A proper "transfer switch" is two sets of breakers with a physical interconnect such that only one set can be "on", each set is connected to one source (grid, generator), the common bus then feeds the (original) main breaker. I think I've seen them at Home Depot.

When permitted and installed by a licensed electrician, it satisfies the insurance company lawyers, because it is physically impossible to backfeed the grid, and operation of the transfer switch is intuitively obvious.

Only $130, probably cheaper than the permits/electrician:

I would wire the generator side to something like this, mounted somewhere appropriate:

I knew what you were saying!

There should be a "critical load path" when you need the generator. Not everything has to be on it. (our version is no water heater, no dishwasher, no dryer and no microwave.)

Dang! Another one of those "million dollar" ideas that one didn't think of! Looks like it would meet all over current-arc flash parameters as it makes it impossible to have both over current, or breakers on at the same time. Economical and simple installation also. Just remember to shut main power off before removing panel cover to be safe, as the bright and shiny parts inside carry live current if you don't.

Besides the critical load path and the basic stuff, what are you adding this year to your hurricane kit that you could have used last year to make it easier -
#1 for morning after
#2 for the duration

My #1 - I am going to have preps together for coffee ahead of time. (grind it & in baggie, with french press, stored in pot for boiling with 2 coffee cups, dry creamer, and sitting next to propane burner with a gal of water next to it). Also breakfast burritos made and frozen ready to heat on BBQ.

My #2 - More little pkgd mayo packs (mustard and ketchup tend to do okay), and more heavy duty tin foil rolls. Camp shower. Retractable clothes line and clothes pins. Milk carton type basket for cold stuff to go to cooking area and back in refrigeration (in one step).

Hmm. The byline of the NOAA news item referenced by that article reads "Forecasters predict it will stay weak, have little influence on weather and climate"
