TMT Work to Resume Says Ige!
#51
Gov. Ige
"6. What I would hope to see is that future visitor access to the mountain be handled through the Native Hawaiian community so that visitors have a greater understanding of and respect for the cultural significance of the mountain. Anyone going on the mountain must receive training in the cultural aspects of the mountain and how to be respectful to the cultural areas."

say what? where to begin... who exactly is in theory "the Native Hawaiian community" here in our actual community. anyone with trace or more of the prerequisite DNA?

"Anyone going on the mountain must receive training in the cultural aspects of the mountain and how to be respectful to the cultural areas."

seriously?

..the more i think about this the more outlandish it becomes. yes, i am very curious how such a fancy idea might interplay with fundamental rights and federal law.

It is a photo that has been photoshopped to whiteout the Keck twin observatories and leaves UKIRT to represent the desecration.

If the protestors are comfortable with using Photoshop to make their point, then maybe that's also the solution to this issue. Photoshop ALL the telescopes off the mountain top, give them a framed print, problem solved.

Good job Ted.

But let's not stop there. With your keen eye, the County of Hawaii should hire you as their ICO or "Image Compliance Officer." Whenever there's a visual problem under county jurisdiction, you can remove or reduce the evidence, and show photographic proof that, no, we're not running out of space at the landfill. Look, there's still plenty of room!

Whatever they pay you, they'll still save money if they don't actually have to fix or change anything.

What if my, non-Hawaiian based culture states, "We must have full access to the mountain anytime we want it for cultural reasons because we think it is sacred."

Who can argue against that? I would be happy to file the class-action lawsuit. Prove that "my" culture is wrong.

"So, these "protectors" don't have TMT as an example for "evil" to use as a photo backdrop. Look what is being used as the effigy in place of TMT, UKIRT.

"Then, ran into one that is a mind blower. It is a photo that has been photoshopped to whiteout the Keck twin observatories and leaves UKIRT to represent the desecration.

I'm going to have to speak to our summit crew. I really expect to be told about things like this. Without my knowledge, the UKIRT dome has been completely redesigned to make it look like Subaru and has also been moved to a new location. Frankly, that's not acceptable.

Unrealistic scenario, kalakoa. Feeds into the frenzy (as we use our computers, phones, etc.). The issue here is Mauna Kea and the stewardship as it continues to be developed on "Conservation Land"

I get the impression some of the sovereignty groups would love to turn back the clock and forcibly eject modern conveniences, such as Wal-Mart. In short, there is some validity with Kalakoa's statement.

If you read the Hawaii Administrative Rules #13-5-24c, telescope facilities are a appropriate use of conservation land, as long as a management plan is in place.

Aaron: Plans are great! Implementing them is a different story, and key to success. Promises made must be kept.

The quandary we find ourselves in, is described within the documents you provide. This includes conditions to fulfill the obligation to "the plan" (Check out the State Auditor reports).

FYI:

Osorio says a failure by DLNR to properly monitor what UH was doing has contributed to Mauna Kea being treated not as conservation land, but rather as an industrial site.

"Because the telescope industry basically was able to see Mauna Kea and to exploit Mauna Kea as though it was its own property, we are now at a place where there is a complete impasse. I'm not saying if this had been handled differently this thing would've been built without all this pilikia (problem) but I am saying that it is impossible now that this can be built without confrontation and that is the fault of the state of Hawai'i. It is not the fault of the protectors of the mountain. It is not the fault of the environmental lobbyists. It is not the fault of the people who have been voicing these objections and have been basically disregarded all of these years," said Osorio.

The UH via/and the State, are responsible for oversight, and adhering to the regulations set forth on Conservation land. Not to mention, the lease agreement conditions.

As an aside, this is still about much more than TMT. (Also mentioned in the article/report above, and elsewhere)

I think all this talk about doing it better or whatever they're saying is pure crap. Politicians have pulled that line forever. It isn't going to happen. Everyone takes advantage, EVERYONE is full of greed and the people that run the telescopes are not any different. Period. They all say what they think we want to hear and then take all they want. It has never been any different. Ige is just another slick talking snake in the grass.

Enough is enough—A’ole TMT!

It is, dakine, it is. We need to figure out how to move forward, with or without TMT.

Ige is a classic "politician in training". Nothing more, nothing less. At best, we all learn a very expensive lesson at the end of the day. (*He stay scared of lawsuits TMT is entitled to file; but he tried to placate all sides to this issue. Good training.)

Agreed, Paul W. However, the "payoff" isn't always dead presidents on paper, Sir.
