Thank you all for the good discussion now concerning Hawaii's Wekiu. The wekiu bug was first discovered living by a biologist in 1980 in the three tallest cinder cones atop maunakea. Since then the wekiu bug has been found individually in many other locations across the summit of maunakea, including living under rocks and also other cones up to 3 miles further down slope. Astronomers atop maunakea knew of these first cones that were the home to the wekiu bug, yet where are those tallest cinder cones today? When was the Keck observatory built, when or what year did NASA help fund the side projects for Keck?
Jmo, Just because you find the wekiu individual or possibly displaced does not always equate to more or doing better than before. The TMT projects lawyers only formed or found loopholes to support their own cause to have the wekiu bug taken off the endangered list in my opinion. Millions were spent studying the wekiu, millions were spent to change the wekiu habitat, millions were spent to have the wekiu bug removed from those first cones or be taken off the endangered list. What has been done to protect the wekiu environment or habitat? Building domes in place of cones is not bettering the home of the wekiu, nor was it the intention by the observatory community.

Your statement while fair and yours, is appauling and obnoxiously ignorant to the situation. Resorting to calling my wife a clown, while its your opinion it also shows more of your intelligence about our big island brah. I for one am glad this time has come for the Hawaiian people to rise up and take a stand. If not today over this TMT project then when? Jmo here, The people living Hawaii today, also the protection of the living wekiu bug and other organism's atop maunakea are just as important as the foriegn investors projects or money being spent to find the Wekiu cousin on the planets of Pluto or venus.

Do you have a link to where you read this? Or source?
Generally astronomers do not have a dual major in entomology, so I find it difficult to imagine they would even notice a bug hiding under cinder and rocks. Also, most of the astronomers would not even arrive on site until after the telescope is built, with the exception of a few who work with the architects during the planning stages.

Hotpe, good afternoon. The first telescope went up in the early 60's, with more being built in the following decade. All of which had astronomers working atop maunakea, it is their responsibility to learn, respect and preserve the land they are leasing. They(astronomers) usually are curious, intuitive, and smart folks who are very keen about their surroundings, in my opinion.
Looking the other way when things are done wrong may not be illegal, it may be what many astronomers have been doing for decades atop Maunakea unfortunately? See these current astronomers working atop maunakea have drove up and down the mountain many times over the years,(more than you and I, or any rangers hired). Astronomer's see what happens on top and AROUND maunakea more than any other man or woman of the human race. Most reports or complaints to rangers may even come from the astronomers, connections, and associates atop maunakea. Instead of reporting false bullet holes to further devide our fragile community. Reporting the removal of rocks, cones, living creatures, and improper ways of developing or diverting precious resources may lead to trust and support from folks like ME. The Maunakea summit may be the closest land or connection to the saints and Angel's in the heavens, this does not mean that all astronomers are the listener's of the peoples prayers., but some act like it K. Well here is a thought I had for some state revenue. Tom you probably would know best if its even slightly possible? Could snow be man made up near the summit on most nights? Is it cold enough for some snow making machines? See if we could consistently make snow up near the top we could discuss all kinds of possible revenue makers. Personally I would love to see some extreme skiing and or ski jumping. Also holding ponds or lakes from the daily melted snow could offer lots of potential? Maybe some snow sales, where they load your truck full of the white stuff before you depart the summit?
I have gone skiing at least a half dozen times up there in the past(not sure if its still aloud)absolutely stunning and crazy dangerous. Mountain biking, hiking, and other extremes would be some narly adventures too. With such spacious observatories already there, with more sure to come. We should have a nice romantic place to eat near the top with plenty of entertainment too.

If you are going to stand for a cause against something and claim to be Pono in doing so, and you say it isn't about sovereignty then you fly the flag upright. Duh

There's different people with different reasons for protesting, but majority of them have been saying that Hawaii has been illegally occupied since day 1. Actually since the DOI came to Keaukaha.
