Quoted from Mr. Ha's letter:
"The net result is loss of their brightest and most hard working youth." ----- Having attended several Pahoa high school graduations (and National Honor Society induction ceremonies)over the past few years, I know firsthand how true his statement is. Nearly all of the top graduates leave for mainland colleges and universities, mentioning also that they plan to work in certain fields - in which those jobs just don't exist here. It is sad.

Has anyone in the Economic Division of the State taken the initiative to run a search on what fields these graduates are going towards and try to lure them, or their subsidiaries to establish businesses here, or are they still in the Stone Age, only minimum wage catering to Tourii type frame of mind.
Diversity is the key to having independence. If you keep someone oppressed by limited career choices you never grow anything but bitterness, and who wants to spend a vacation with bitter, angry people. They need to think about this... Community begins with Aloha

The reality. Focus on local STEM education highest quality and caliber. No STEM employers or jobs on Hawaii island. Plenty of STEM jobs on the mainland. Hello?
The illusion. Focus on very narrow and specialized fields of Hawaiian culture education with Hawaiian language immersion. Cultural and tourism jobs, plenty. The Hawaii island educational system does not educate for employment on Hawaii island. It educates to qualify for mainland jobs, where employment growth is almost all technology driven. Just looking at the stats, the island economy supports those that want to stay by going the vocational route and almost ensures those that take a high technology advanced degree career path will only find themselves on the mainland. It doesn't look like this situation will change anytime soon, and the net effect is the young leave, the old increase and get older, until they get so old they need their young back or have to go to them. It's amazing how self regulating this island is. "Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!"

Disagree: the dropouts can always get a maintenance job at one of the many fine County parks.

Well it just disgusts me that there are no higher paying jobs, or jobs available so that one can afford to feed and clothe their keiki, and pretty much rely on the tourist industry when travel is a pretty fickle thing as of late. The airlines treat you like a piece of freight, if the economy tanks again, or terrorism increases, you can bet they are not going to spend the money, and with prices climbing a young family coming here for a week better have a strong cash portfolio, and spend it wisely, limiting the people that do come over for vacation, and therefore tipping is pretty slim, which a lot of waitstaff depends on.

Tink, thank you. I couldn't have wrote it any better, they do need to put plenty more thought into this...
My opinion would have come across very much the same way as punatic007's, most likely worse. So much baloney and assumptions within that letter. It was well written by Mr Ha,obviously on the side of building the TMT as planned. Mr Walter is simply amazing at what ever he does. Its Hard not to just go along with what ever that man says, he is so easy going and comes across so intelligent ( Mr Walter ). Anyway I could pick that letter apart from beginning to end, pointing out many insensitivity's, assumptions, and misleading statements. I will spare you all my tiering rant, as Punatic007 is hitting the nail on the head to this point. Time to go hang out with some teenagers and yell four,for,4!! |
