Introduce yourself
#61
My name is Laura Kimmick and right now I live in Henderson, Nevada with my family (husband, Randy; daughter, Amber-age 14; son, Kobe-age 3).

We plan on living in or near Hilo, Hawaii.

Right now, I'm trying to become a TSA so I can work at Hilo Airport.

We will move to the East Side of the Big Island as soon as I become a TSA.

Most likely, we will rent before we buy.

Nice to meet many people who live on the East Side of the Big Island or plan to live on the East Side of the Big Island.

Dear Pam,

The three or more of us hosting Punaweb Parties and Punaweb Holiday Parties is a wonderful idea and I know these parties will be successful.

So glad I met you and looking forward to living in Hilo or the Puna area as soon as the Federal Government hires me as a TSA at Hilo Airport.

Sincerely,

Laura Kimmick

Hello Pam and Laura et al ;-)
Now that you will get all that company in February, Pam, we have to have a second 'blessing' of your home when we all come to visit you in your 'RAINFOREST'castle. If you are moved in by then we will call it a housewarming party.
If not, it will be a 'Cabana' Boys PARTY.
31 days and counting....KarlJ....

Aloha!

I'm Colleen, and my husband Jim and I currently live in Oakland, CA. We have been extremely fortunate in buying a house early in a boom market and will be grateful equity refugees in Orchidland Estates, where we have a 3-acre lot. I am currently a graphic designer - don't know what skills are needed in Puna, but the universe has been very resolute in bringing us here, so I'm sure Hawai'i has a purpose for me. Jim is an adult-ed teacher with lots of experience teaching life skills to people at risk (communication, anger management, the process of drug rehabilitation, etc.), so he can start giving back right away.

I was a military brat (Marine Corps) and spent my formative years in Kaneohe, Oahu, where I was firmly imprinted with the culture of aloha. I have long pined to be back in the Islands, and when I dragged Jim to Maui for our 10th anniversary, he began to understand my obsession. It took about 2 years and several visits to the BI to talk him out of our Oakland lifestyle and into our island adventure, but I finally did it, (with the help of some very timely and fortunate coincidences and Jim's inherent good sense), and now he is firmly on board and looking forward to living "la vida aloha".

We have purchased a kit plantation home with Big Island Package Homes (based in Hilo) and are currently shopping for turnkey general contractors (recommendations are most welcome). We will start building at the earliest opportunity and plan on being here to stay (with our 2 dogs) by next fall. As we have no construction experience, I'm loving this forum. I apologize in advance for the elementary level of my future questions, and appreciate any and all assistance.

I am a hula dancer (more sincerity than talent, alas) with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts here in Oakland as well as a vocalist in the halau's Hawaiian music ensemble, AHAmele. We'll definitely be looking for music-minded folks to jam with next year. I'm also in the market for a non-competitive, Puna-based hula halau (kahiko style) to join up with.

Not to sound too corny or anything, but gosh darn it - arent' we all LUCKY!!! Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hello everyone, I am Naomi. I live in Roseburg, OR. Me and my mom are still in the questions and dream and planning stage of moving to the Island. We don't own any property yet. We plan to come and stay at least 2-4 weeks to get a better idea of the Puna area. Hopefully this next year (2006. Everyone seems very kind and caring.

Wow now we're cookin. Love the action that the forum is generating and the aloha!

Welcom to Laura K, Henderson NV and THE famous Karl J of the Konaweb chat crew. Hope you both find the info and answers to life on the Eastside you might be looking for!

Halo to Colleen, Lucy and Naomi and welcome to the punatic forum.

Colleen as a military brat I too look forward to the island life and a place to make a difference in our community, as we cherish and caretake our little bit of aina.

As a former Montclair resident it never ceases to amaze me just how small the world is. Might I suggest as the first member I am aware of to be in the planning stages of a Kit Home that you start a new thread about the process your progress and questions to share with us, then we could all tune in to that thread with our questions and interests. Just a thought I know it would be appreciated by all.

Naomi Aloha. I married a born and bread Portlander and yes the moss does grow on the north side of his nose. Best of luck to you and your mom in the decision process, it took us a while to realise that this is a possible dream! We are here to encourage you along so find a thread or start a new one and ask away. We might have some answers and then again not. But we will have fun!

And welcome ABOARD Lucy! And like your Lanai link! Oh for all Lucy is the new care taker of puppies, but I can't remember which kind of puppies they are darn.

Do you think that perhaps our military backgrounds give us a heightened sense of adventure at striking out on a new course? Glad you made it to the Punaweb you will bring mirth to our group and will find interesting and helpful info and if you don't then you just need ask! Can barely sit in my chair thinking of the gardening we will have 24/7. Last trip over I spent one entire afternoon at the Orchid Society Show in Hilo! The on islanders are probably LTAO as we have no real idea of how fast things grow and get out of hand, but hey bring it on! We are up to it.

So great, new virtual friends soon to meet on the Terra firma! One day when a few more of us get over to help out we will begin the new saga of the PunaParties for Eastsiders and Westsiders are always welcome.
