So will the homeless, learning the ancient ways of subsistence living, gleaning fruits and vegetables from the gardens around them, foraging for whatever may be salvageable from outdoor rubbish cans, hunting the occasional pig and goat, power from jacked solar panels, getting some coin from the occasional carjacking. Hasn't that been the goal of Puna for a long time, to be a model of subsistence living? Gleaning, foraging, recycling, reusing, getting totally off the grid, it will be environmentally educational as well.

"Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!"

That's been my impression for most of a decade.

I'm no millionaire; and we do have some mcMansions for sure; I say what I say because of the genuine concern of folks here in Hamakua. We don't have as many VRBO, second home owners, or "let's give Hawaii a try" folks here. Most folks are not transplants like me. We have a LOT of long term locals who keep their eyes and ears to the ground. I am sure I was carefully vetted by my neighbors before I was accepted into the neighborhood. Had I been some A-hole Haole, moochy looser, hairbrained nut job, or mainland ice head I am sure they would have made life difficult for me. Instead, they have made life wonderful, and helped me in fantastic ways. When I leased out the other house on the land, they stopped folks coming up the road, wondering where they were going; happily giving advice when my name was mentioned.

Folks here really look out for each other and genuinely care about the neighborhoods, the keiki, and each other. A perfect example is Honoka'a. When the People's Theater needed to raise 40K for a new digital projector, the town came together and raised 120K; they've built an amazing skate park for the Keiki. Honoka'a is really starting to shine. Folks even look out for the adult day care fellas who wander from store to store. Recently I saw a kid riding his skateboard down the wooden sidewalk. 2 fellas asked him to please not ride it on the sidewalk, he said "OK, sorry." popped it onto his shoulder, the gents said "thank you young man" he replied "no problem."

It really can be like leave it to Beaver here. That's why I doubt homeless camps could work in Hamakua.

There is a HARC ( road board ) meeting this Sunday Aug 30th at 2 in the afternoon, perhaps the Pastor from Oahu will attend and those here in H.A. can ask specific questions directly to the Pastor himself.
We tried to attend the last H.A.C.A. meeting but the doors were locked and only board members were allowed in. ( Secret Meeting ).
We hope the Road Board meeting at the H.A.C.A. center will be open to all and not just board members behind closed doors.

mrs mimosa, i have never been turned away from a harc meeting. i truly believe they are trying. but i believe the pastor was told the road committee had no say in what he was proposing. Personally i don't think having the haca folks either approve/disapprove would have much bearing either. both organizations have less than 10% participation of lot owners. ( i find that very sad in the case of our roads) so i doubt the pastor will return to road meeting. i can't imagine this ever making it through planning dept either, as everyone has stated, there are no services in the acres for this troubled population.

lquade - We are happy no one has been turned away from a harc meeting, the meeting we tried to attend was a haca meeting and there were quite a few residents also locked out from attending the haca meeting. We had specific questions for the haca board regarding this Pastor and his homeless encampment church group.
Maybe the Pastor will show up at the HARC meeting again and if by chance he does,we will be able to ask the questions to find out facts of his grand visions here in H.A. on Rd One .
Or maybe the president of HARC will know more and can answer the residents questions on this homeless relocation project slated for Rd 1 in H.A. We did stop by the office ( tuesday the 25th ) but the 2 office managers,a woman and a man, knew nothing of the Pastor or his plans for Rd 1 homeless relocation village .

Mimosa , as i have said before the HACA board opened the door for this church by inviting a church group to use the community center to feed the homeless on saturdays. the dept of health shut it down once due to a lack of a certified kitchen , but the HACA organization chose to reopen against the dept of health rules and call it another name "pot luck" and start feeding the homeless again. so it should be no surprise that the church now wants to open a homeless camp in the acres since HACA has encouraged the activity of homeless feeding.
and i have heard that the chruch has the support of the state and county , so good luck to our community .
yes the HACA board has not held an open meeting to its members in over 3 months and HARC is dysfunctional just look at the condition of the roads, no board left i heard they only have 2 board members left and neither board has posted financial records for the past 6 months

seems a lot of these misunderstandings is driven by some hard headed individuals that want to use other's resources to do good. if you want to feed the homeless, go buy some food, go downtown and give it to them. don't invite them to other's peoples houses and/or try to get them a house in other people's neighborhoods, especially when you don't even own a house or land there.

also, seems like lot's of the decisions at community meetings is based on some hard headed individuals point of view. i wish there was more oversight at community meetings so these yahoos can't get away with whatever their hair-brained idea is.

Blues boy had to laugh, you must have been at the same community meeting I was. It was monopolized by about 3 individuals when people drove out in the dark to hear from our councilmen. They just couldn't shut up and let others hear or ask questions. Greggor and paleka did their best to keep the meeting going but it was frustrating. Again I will report when I hear back with their answers but neither were aware of this plan thus far. (Homeless camp)

Apparently, this hit the fan early this month. Here is an early post from the HA Facebook page:

August 3 at 6:16am
so, go to road meeting... guy comes in does his speil , wants to bring a HOMELESS ENCAMPMENT into the acres. buying 4 acres on ONE ROAD and wants to build 20 homes and bus in hilo's homeless. wants to teach them trades like small engine repair, pipe fitting and aquaponics ( had to throw some type agi stuff in there). trying for a special use permit. so since we don't have any problems with THEFT, we have all this nice bus service to get them around and such good police coverage here, he was hoping everyone would welcome them with open arms and that HARC and HACA would send the county words of encouragement... of course, he doesnt live here, just wants the acres to take care of his problem for his feel good day... so just passing this along if this is something up your alley....

pastor craig kekahuna from the lord jesus international ministry is the person trying to get this going

At least he's talking about Hilo homeless, instead of Oahu...
