Best Fire Ant Man
#1
PLEASE help me - does anyone know the best place to call to remove fire ants on an acre of land? My dog is going to be blind if something isn't done now. My other dogs don't have bites in their eyes, only Patches.

Please give me referrals of people to call. It will be a big job because the property is full of bushes and trees.

Thank you!

Until you get someone to spray you can go to BEI in Hilo and pick up one of a few different types of "by hand" spreadable LFA treatment in bulk to protect your dogs ASAP. Do the perimeter of your property first.

Even Home Depot has a few options of decent products too.

I do it myself, put on a pair of good vinyl gloves and just toss it around, paying good attention to the direction of the wind. Treat the area around where your dog eats and sleeps.

Home Defense spray also found at home depot and Walmart works inside and around the house under the eaves. It is non-toxic to humans and animals when it dries, or so the instructions say.

Welcome to the new Puna.

Thanks for the advice, Punatic. Do the ants bite my dog's eyes mostly when he sleeps? My problem is the whole acre is fenced and the dogs run loose so I plan on having the whole acre done. I have some Talstar that I buy from Garden Exchange and sprinkle around the outside of the house but it looks like I need to do something radical with the whole acre before Patches is blind.
Thanks again for answering.

Kill Fire Ants 443-6008. Zack & Luna are the best.

The ants probably bit his eyes because they were in the food dish--they love protein.

Sadly, once bitten, the eyes don't recover. I had heard a rumor that if you get rid of the ants, the eyes get better, but I asked my vet and she said that isn't true.

My dog was blinded because she liked sleeping in vegetation the LFA also liked, we keep food bowls clean and remove them promptly, but unless we made our yard a desert with no plants or turned her into an indoor dog there was nothing we could do. Another dog we had never got bit once, but she tended to hang out away from the vegetation.

edited for typos

Zach at KFA is overwhelmed..... I've been on his waiting list for a couple months now!
Anyone got any other ideas? Any other people treating for LFA's?

Me too... Zach never returned my calls. I'm guessing he has more business than he can handle. I wound up going to the little Pahoa feed and seed store and got some Tango and Siesta which seem to be working OK.
