False equivalence: County is not run by "we the people".

Eo!, Kalakoa. (BBM) Again, it should be, as the initial intent of the quote from the beginning of the great USofA Constitution states. This one (the preamble):

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Will it happen (again, if it ever "was"), should it happen, when will it happen, are questions that will prevail until resolved. Interesting that the law of the land(s) don't always prevail in the interest of "the public". Time for change (or reverting to the intent of statement made via Constitution of the USofA).

As to this topic, the utilities should be managed by "the people". Period. Puna (and all of Hawai'i) deserves a hell of alot more than what the County/State/Federal Government have afforded to date.

Good start would be with utilities (and OUR resources), and management thereof.

Agree that the intent is great -- problem is that the implementation has been gamed.

This is a case of put your money where your mouth is. Hawaiian Electric and American Savings Bank are valued arounr $4+ billion. There was some article that said Nextera is bidding $4.5 billion with the spinoff of American Savings Bank.

If somebody wants to step up and bid $5 billion, then the shareholders would agree to that, since it is way over value plus loaded with liabilities and small utility fixed profit. No doubt, the network is changing with recent news of 270 watt solar panels at less cost. On one hand, for HE, they are paying a lot less for their oil burning plants. On the other hand, there is growing pressure and reason to allow a lot more net-feed solar.

Civil beat recently had an article and they found HELCO is valued around $800 million internally to HE. It is possible to look at the islands independently. There is no electric cable between the islands. Each island is its own power producer, the only connection to the parent HE is a financial one, not a functional one. The decision for the PUC to approve or disapprove the Nextera merger is going to rest on nonemotional evidence that Nextera is competent and can show better management capability than Hawaiian Electric. That isn't going to be that hard.

The original intent had a different definition of the word "people" than we do in 2015. In the Constitution and Declaration of Independence, there was a specific meaning to the words "all men" and "people", which was, a white land owning male over 21. Women, native americans, blacks, asians, were not people and were not men, actually being seen as subhumans. It took an amendment to have the vermin be recognized as humans.

When Thomas Jefferson wrote those words, he had become wealthy on the backs of hundreds of slaves. Everybody looks at how magnificent Monticello is and rarely looks at the basement, which was the quarters of his house slaves, the most presentable to guests. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are New World White Anglo Saxon Protestant (WASP) doctrine documents.

HEI NEE merger approved

These two holding companies have agreed to combine, the transaction is valued at 4.3 billion with assumption of 1.7 billion HEI's debt. The merger excludes HEI's banking subsidiary. HEI is the parent of American Savings Bank. What a history this bank has... oh never mind that[Wink]

I thought it might be helpful to look at the details of the merger up close and personal. For those who have not. There is a lot of information to be had here. This is what they presented to the shareholders.

One thing that really stands out is the role natural gas is to play in their plan. The Governor has thrown a monkey wrench into the plan.[Big Grin]

Plus NextEra doesn't even agree with the goal Hawaii's 100% renewable energy by 2040 they say 65% is more realistic.

The primary reality of Hawaii electricity is that 70% (overall, 50% Hawaii island) still comes from oil burning plants.

The rockhead Punatic is able to keep ignoring these plants but reality is they have been here for 100 years and they are going to be there for at least another half century. There is no sane, rational, cost effective way to meth-wish these away into a swirling smoke cloud.

Right now, every year, the EPA keeps fining the plants for throwing thousands of tons of SO2 into the air over our heads. The stacks could be replaced with new technology material scrubber stacks but their replacement cost would be in the millions. The EPA fines are a lot less.

From a business side, converting old boiler fired steam turbines and diesel generators to natural gas turbines cuts pollution waste while increasing efficiency. This is a conversion to keep a necessary power generation plant running for several more years while decreasing pollution. It is looking like the LNG won't be foreign imported, coming from the mainland. These aren't huge LNG tanker ships, they are container sized tanks.

This is not some sinister HE conspiracy to start building new LNG electric plants.

Today 124 years ago HECO incorporated October 13,1891
HECO is like a hooker selling her assets. She got them so she sells them but she still has them. So she sells them again and again.

The only reason I call attention to this date is because both companies go to great lengths to mention a royal charter by the King and that they shared the same vision. What will men and now women do to hold on to POWER?

The United States Department of Defense currently oppose the HECO/NextEra deal.read more below

PUC is being asked to exclude "certain members of the public" from a public hearing (paid for by the public, to investigate issues which pertain to the public).

Because, you know, they might ask inconvenient questions, or otherwise hinder the multi-billion-dollar "merger", delay the big payout to executives, etc.

Portions of testimony submitted Monday to the PUC by an energy adviser speaking on behalf of the NextEra-HEI merger took aim at public ownership of utilities, saying the commission should not delay or reject the transaction to include the consideration of municipal or cooperative utilities.

Yes, because the government is always interested in a speedy approval process, or the resolution of disputes, like Billy's pCard, the TMT, etc.
