"Homeland Security has a 5 year screening process from what I've heard."
Mike,
It's not a 5 year process, it's a 12-24 month process.

If Syrian refugees arrive and are treated as foreign invaders, with suspicion and mistrust, and they grow up as strangers in a strange land, never feeling at peace in their homes, some of them may one day come across a website based in the Middle East, thousands of miles away that promises them brotherhood and understanding from people who look like they do, and oh by the way do you feel oppressed? That's because you are oppressed by the people who aren't just around you, they're over you, and you're beneath them, and wouldn't you like a way to get back at them?
Then everyone who said resettling Syrian refugees in Hawaii was a bad idea will have proved themselves correct.

Yes UsGuys, the general tone on PW of late is a heady mixture of posts by people filled with hate and loathing for all things different than themselves. Which I find truly un-American, even though I suspect they're fervent flag wavers. History is filled with this kind of people. Why would we expect it to be otherwise? One can hope, but yeah, where's the aloha?

Hawaii has the worst homeless problem per capita in the United States and the governor wants to bring in more homeless people ?
Shouldn't he come up with a fix for the existing problem first ?

the homeless issue in hawaii should be the highest priority , before bringing in more people that will put another huge drain on the islands . there is not enough housing for the local people and to add another burden to the islands is irresponsible . hawaii is going to loose its tourism, the biggest part of the economy unless the homeless situation is brought under control .

Oh, I'm pretty sure the refugees won't be invited to settle Oahu.

A bunch of governors have already said, wait a minute.
Being one of those guys that are part-time World War II buffs, these images of the crescent forming across North Africa, up through the Middle East, into Eastern Europe, then spilling into Europe and entangling the US, oh well, deja vu all over again. And nobody seems to remember the Republican Regime that decided to let 100,000 Saddam Republican guard and 200,000 regular army go into exile in south Syria. Oh, well, right?

Hey another issue most of us agree on. \m/
As bad as I feel for those refugees, we have our own problems here in Hawaii and O'ahu is already overpopulated so the majority of these refugees will definitely be heading to the outer islands putting an even bigger strain on us not to mention the culture shock they'd be in for.
If the US is going to be accepting refugees, I would suggest places like Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, Montana etc. Middle america. Where there is a lot of land and the population is relatively low.
