shared container to Hilo
#11
Ammunition. The markup here is unbelievable and the local stores are frequently out of many varieties. I'm only aware of one mainland ammo place that will even ship here and the requirement to use UPS 2nd day eats up all the savings.

terracore, who will ship ammo to Hawaii?. Oddly, most motorcycle and scooter parts stores won't ship tires here. Don't know why. To the original poster, if you have any .22 long rifle firearms, bring a bunch of that ammo here. I've always loaded my own centerfire ammo, but I have yet to shoot a smokeless powder firearm here. Finding a place to shoot is the problem. There is one indoor range in Hilo.

In addition to the UPS 2nd day air they also pass on a $36 hazmat fee per shipment off the mainland. If you are going to make an order, make it a big one. Looks like they have some sort of Black Friday sale starting tomorrow.

ETA: Last time I was at J Hara they had plenty of .22LR (the place in Hilo is always out). I don't recall how much it was but it was bad enough I didn't buy any.

I assume that Wall Mart doesn't sell firearms or ammunition here? I've only seen air guns and pellets and bb's.

I've never been into J. Hara's store, so I'll check them out soon.

thanks for all the input... lived in Hilo the last four years/longer without the stuff in Utah storage but it is coming on the big boat and that is the name of that tune... good shape hi cube containers do bring a premium on the BI.. so that is a start in getting costs down..... thinking of packing all the stuff around a couple of rust free small old Ford tractors and selling one or both... that should get costs down even more.... even if I have to pay Matson extra for farm equipt.... the containerized freight rate around the world has dropped... as in $300 total for a container from China to N Europe right now... but Matson still wants $4462 Long Beach to Hilo, port to port..... oh well

Just pack your container with money. Lots of money. It seems to do well around here.

Dennis - I tried to message you via the forum messaging function, but got an error. So I'm replying to the post. I'm just up in Boise and would love to share a container for June. I have around 800 cubic feet I'm looking at moving. I'm motivated to share, my last quote for 800 cubic feet was $6600... pretty outrageous. Email me at davinnicode (at) gmail dot com.

Hope to hear from you.
