Obsessively snivel and whine while ignoring any role of personal responsibility?
Many of the things for which I would gladly take responsibility are subject to prohibitive regulations by the State. I am free to ignore the rules at risk to my freedom; I am also obliged to seek permission, and die of old age while waiting for approval.
State needs to be more involved, or less.
Unless the argument is that I willingly sought the arrangement wherein I pay taxes and receive no services in return. Roads, maybe; public health, not so much.

Yes, that's exactly why I pay taxes, so I can also be responsible for vector control.
You have a point. It's my understanding that in the countries able to wipe out Dengue with the house traps, said traps were furnished and delivered by the government. I heard the Seaview Association impressively used their association fees to make traps,
I agree wholeheartedly the gov should have and NOW should be making and passing out traps with the first few cases. I've been told the Big Island budget was ridiculously low from cuts, in which case Oahu, the CDC and anyone else should have been called in immediately. Unbelievable.
Traps and GMO mosquito are needed immediately. The other diseases this type of mosquito can spread are absolutely horrid.

If individuals started mass spraying their own properties with the insecticide of their choice, how long do you think it would be:
*Before a neighbor called the police to complain?
*A neighbor went to the emergency room and claimed they had a reaction to spray drift?
*Filed a lawsuit?
Yes, you can build a few homemade traps, but only the state can step in to eradicate mosquitoes in an area where a patient tested positive for dengue. Or other areas as a preventative measure.

The physicist going around giving lessons to communities on how to make and use the traps disagrees with you HOPTE.
4 to 10 traps under the eaves at each home is what has stopped outbreaks in other countries. Surely that's not too complicated for the adults of the Big Island. If the gov isn't stepping up to the plate, why don't we?

Dengue may be eradicated with the aid of the state along with collective individual efforts, yet the scourge of kalakoa's unwavering obsession would remain endemic in it's corner of cyberspace, lurking to manically spring forth even in such seemingly benign and far ranging topics such as banana bread recipe sharing or macrame techniques incorporating local fibers.

Don't think I would be interested in attracting mosquitoes to my house.Maybe away from the house.
My ongoing efforts of ridding the yard of breeding spots seems to work best for me.Of course I started 16 years ago when I bought my house and the first few years consisted of hauling away a 20 year collection of green waste.

It's a different type of trap, patented by the US Navy and easy to make. Under the eaves is what works to eradicate Dengue. I asked about putting them in the yard and orchard and yes the more the merrier but we are concerned with domesticated mosquitos, that's my phrase, those adapted to living around human dwellings.

Why not both? Government and individuals working together have a better chance of minimizing the effect of the outbreak.
This is not a criticism, just a comment. The fact that a physicist is publicizing the do-it-yourself mosquito traps doesn't really add to the validity of the traps performance, unless the trap in some way functions by reacting to the mass and acceleration of the insect. Although the eventual effects of gravity are no doubt applied as the bug sinks to the bottom of the bucket, this is likely a consequence of any container based trapping system, rather than a design feature. The trap being promoted around Puna recently employs the expertise of biologists and entomologists in it's practical operation. I would agree the average physicist is probably smart enough to know whether or not it works though.
And I suppose it does sound better to say "physicist" rather than "that one really smart scientist guy." So never mind.

Obviously the gov has failed us yet again. Hawaii is well known as a Banana Republic, getting better yet the Big Island is still in the grips of corrupt politician. And I'm not impressed with Ige either, definitely good ol boy club. You know it, we all know it.
Therefore we have choices, get on our politicians and make traps. Easy.
Before you knock the physicist, go to one of his meeting which have been in conjuction with the health dept. I was very impressed, but you folks don't know me. That said, keep an open mind, if anything have some faith in the research paid for by our Navy. That's all the phantom physicist is saying, repeating what the Navy has done to protect our armed forces...successfully.

how to make and use the traps
Large-scale State-sponsored distribution overcomes the inertia factor; in my opinion this improves the response by an order of magnitude or more.
Yes, I can make the trap -- but if they were handing them out at the beer store, I would already have several hanging around the house. Cheap investment, and with my tax dollars.
