TMT Work to Resume Says Ige!
Most come to Hawaii as a tourist spending to get a vacation from business. This won't hurt everyone, as many kids on the big island need free lunch and shoes already. What do you think those kids will be losing Tomk? Fifty years of astronomy here on maunakea has not helped the way the astronomy community had promised it would. Also there is no place like our (maunakea), the offers will keep coming over the years as it is still the astronomy capital of the world without tmt disneyland.
Now that some observatories will be decommissioned atop maunakea, we could see some locally used observatories go in its places? The year 2033 should provide a much clearer picture of how maunakea will be used in the future. At least the power of the people will still be able to vote on it or not? Ramming a billion dollar telescope atop maunakea in 2025, that was supposed to have a lifespan of over fifty years would not have been the pono way to extend the desecration of our maunakea, jmo.

It's so tempting though, so hard to resist...

we could see some locally used observatories go in its places?

I don't understand how a locally owned and operated telescope, which by definition would have to be built with money from Hawaiian taxpayers, funds that could otherwise be used our keiki's education, how that would be an improvement over an internationally financed telescope which offers to provide millions of dollars to local kids for scholarships and education.

Care to explain?

One more to take Gypsy's bait:

"This won't hurt everyone, as many kids on the big island need free lunch and shoes already."

It can and will get worse if the attitude of the TMT protesters prevails.

"At least the power of the people will still be able to vote on it or not?"

Do you really think that the TMT would be held up if all the people of Hawaii were allowed to vote on it? Every poll and every survey says the people want it built.

TMT in the news again.

This is a BS social media petition that doesn't mean crap !

Anybody with internet access can sign that petition and most of them don't live in Hawaii and probably couldn't identify Hawaii on a globe or a map !

dakine: A petition is not a poll or a survey. A survey done by Ward Research found that 62% of Hawaii residents support building the TMT. Here's the link:

Kim Kashdashian has 50 ____Million_____ instagram followers. Do a little math and see what your 66k "signatures" means in social media....

OH how I wish there would be a _popular_ vote. Maybe even have it so that all the votes I choose would be the only votes that could be cast. Though some will think it is all a scam and boycott the vote... Wink

Dakine, if you believe, even for a micro-second, that the majority of Hawaiian citizens is against the TMT, then you are only hearing the "Hawaiians" whinging and ignoring reality.

Stop the TMT and have absolutely nothing but ego shine to show for it. Not an auspicious beginning...but it may improve self-esteem in the short term. Jump and shout!

in the end you're lying to yourselves if you don't recognize that there is some real, and serious, opposition to the project.

Real and serious opposition? Depends on your definition of real and serious. Throwing rocks on a really big rock is real and serious. lol, social media like. Protesting the TMT instead of OHA is surreal, and very likely, simply stupid.

But hey that's what people do here (PW) is prop up their beliefs to the exclusion of all others and think their version of right is the only one possible.

Ouch. That stings. You got me there... Wink

But worry not, dakine, there is no reason to have discourse point by point...your version of right is warm and fuzzy and wins more than ten to one. Telescopes are evil--there is no other real or serious possibility.

No, wait. It's making sense now. I was just looking at it all cocky wobbly. I am doing a conversion before your very eyes! I _must_ stop excluding all others and pretending my version of "right" is the only one possible. Oh, the white man's burden. The horror, the horror...
