Hawai#699;i Island police are investigating a robbery Tuesday morning (January 26) in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subidivision in Puna.
Sometime between 8:45 a.m. and 9 a.m., a 30-year-old woman was checking her mailbox on Paradise Drive near the intersection of 21st Avenue when she was confronted by a man with a knife who demanded money.
The suspect fled into the bushes after removing cash from the victim’s wallet.
He is described as in his mid-30s, between 5-foot-6 and five-foot 8, with short brown hair and a tan complexion. He was wearing a grey or white tank top and black shorts.
Police ask anyone with information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311.
Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the islandwide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000. I'm calling bull**** on this report.
How can such a brazen robbery take place in the front yard of the only county authority in the park? The report says he fled into the bushes? Even with a quick yell of help, the firefighters would have been right there!! at 900am? Trust me, when firefighters call police, police respond fast! There is no way this guy would have gotten way on foot. Sorry. Facts not adding up. Remain vigilant, but no need for further panic.

she might have been on her way someplace and stopped to check her mail on the way.

I think that fire station is un-manned as it is a volunteer station that responds when activated. yes that is a cluster box so she likely drove there with her purse containing drivers license, wallet etc.

Is it so difficult to believe a person checks their mail in the morning, has a wallet on her person, then gets attacked by (my guess) a meth/ice/crackhead who's been up all night and spots a way to get some easy money so he can keep jangling?
She doesn't claim she was abducted and robbed by an alien, or attacked by Bigfoot. Although that might make it more believable for some.

They are cluster boxes. It's very common for people to check their mail on the way or coming back from work or other business. I'm a little surprised some are skeptical of the report especially as it comes from the police.

I'm in HPP but have a Post Office box in Keaau, because, when we moved here, there were no mailboxes available. I think many don't check their box in the clusters in HPP every day. They check it whenever it's convenient. Unusual for a lady to carry money? Why? There are vendors and businesses that don't take credit/debit cards, just cash. Makuu Market, Keaau Market. Lemongrass in Keaau took only cash till recently.
I see no reason to doubt the story myself. The police have been doing a good job busting bad guys lately, let's see if they nab this guy.

I find it amazing that some people would doubt the truth of the victim's report to police. It's bad enough to be victimized. To be doubted when you report it seems to be adding insult to injury to me. That explains why so many crimes go unreported. I check my mail every time I pass the cluster of boxes, including pre dawn, evenings and Sundays. I'm driving so my wallet with driver's license is on the seat. It's necessary to stop the car, open the door and face mailboxes to insert the key. Unless you keep looking around 360 deg. while you get your mail, it's impossible to know if you're being approached by knife wielding bad guys. This is just another example of why we really need to be aware of our surroundings. If you have dogs, they do add an element of security when you check the mail. They notice everything! My heart goes out to the victim of this crime who remains traumatized by the event which DID happen.
