Dengue state of emergency

And Kenoi......the whole state/county govt appears AWOL.

Ige - MIA
Kenoi - AWOL

Even without groundhogs in Hawaii, we'll have a better chance of spotting one of them on the news in a few days, before Kenoi or Ige show up anywhere.

Speaking of the news, has anyone seen any reference to Tulsi Gabbard's statement in the Honolulu media? I am a paid subscriber to the Star-Advertiser web version, and I have not seen it mentioned. Even if they did mention it, I doubt it would bring Ige out of his stupor.

PUTRAJAYA -- The health ministry of Malaysia is still conducting studies on the use of papaya leaf juice to cure dengue fever, said its Director-General, Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Bin Abdullah.

He said clinical studies by the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) on the papaya leaf juice on a dengue fever patient (non-hemorrhagic dengue fever and class one dengue hemorrhagic fever) showed that the intake of 30 milliliters or two large spoonfuls of matured papaya leaf juice daily for three days raised the platelet count.

"The hike in platelet is only one of numerous processes taking place in a patient suffering from dengue fever.

"Studies are still being conducted on the use of papaya leaf juice for dengue fever. The ministry also does not provide papaya leaf juice in government hospitals," he said in a statement here.

Dr Noor Hisham said this when commenting on a statement by certain parties that the papaya leaf contained dangerous chemicals, namely, cyanogenic glycoside which could cause liver, kidney, and heart failure and, subsequently, death.

According to Dr Noor Hisham, the papaya tree is grouped under weak cyanogenesis, namely, producing a small quantity of hydrogen cyanide (there are 0.02 milligrams of cyanide in four papaya leaves and the amount goes down as a leaf increased in maturity).

He said the lowest cyanide dosage to endanger humans is one mg per kilogram of body weight.

As such, he said, a person weighing 60 kg requires 12,000 papaya leaves at one time to induce poisoning.

"Civil Beat (the best news source in the state methinks)" - - - Agreed. Civil List does not, however, have the mass following that the Honolulu newspaper and TV stations do. In fact, the editorial pages of the Star-Advertiser seem to be pretty soft on Ige's obvious shortcomings.

We are residents from Idaho. We scheduled our annual two weeks in Kona to begin Feb. 15. We are very concerned about the outbreak of dengue fever and are strongly considering cancellation. Your state government needs to act on this now

I wondered how long it would take for this to happen.

Might have reached Maui. I'm sure they'll do something about it now.

IMHO, Ige is not making any friends on the Big Island. His televised Dengue update today was underwhelming. Ridiculous how he and Billy keep saying they have to go thru channels of Dr., Lawyer (Indian Chief) before they can declare a State of Emergency, and that they'be been working on it for weeks! Common! Emergencies don't wait for weeks of paperwork. To me it seems Ige is just kicking the can down the road. They said all the sprayers and manpower are here. If there's an outbreak on another island, or some other health risk arises, we're tapped out. I'm grateful for all the work agencies other than DOH are doing,( and to the few DOH personnel who are on he job) CD, HFD, Volunteers. They've beefed up the response, but it's just not enough. Ige had the gall to say that the numbers are dropping, slowing down. 246 diagnosed positives? Most people don't get sick enough to get tested or just don't for personal reasons (no $, no Dr., no transportation, don't like mainstream medicine). 246 is the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more that could, that should be done if we are to get ahead of this outbreak.

Dengue headlines are bad enough, if the Zika virus hits here forget tourism for this island.
