Cop shooting in Hilo 2 ...Tue Walmart parking lot
#21
Not all citizens are obeying the laws.
I have encountered some malahini's that had concealed carry permits on the mainland who are still carrying their weapons around here.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

As it almost surely has been since the dawn of civilization. That's why we have a police force as opposed to roving bands of armed vigilante. Those people you talk about who are violating serious firearms laws are among the criminals.

^ Agree.
Though they don't see themselves as criminals but as equalizers.

This is the result of all these malihini that want to turn Hawaii island into whatever hell-hole mainland suburb or city they came from, like LA, Chicago, Baltimore, and the rest turning into shooting galleries, almost all domestic, virtually nil home owner self defense. With all the shootings lately, there is no doubt the proliferation of hand guns on Hawaii island is starting to match the mainland. Adoption of mainland street thug gangsta replacing Hawaiian culture was apparent to me a few years ago. Nothing has changed except validation. So many people come here and complain, complain, complain, why isn't this Illinois, or why isn't this Michigan, or why isn't this California, or why isn't this Arizona. My definition for malihini is the visitor that moves their body here but leaves their mind on the mainland, even if their visit has been many years. They are eternal malihini.

Funny how total contempt for the local police has now flip-flopped to them doing a good job. Talk about bipolar.

A lot of us in this forum have homes in subdivisions that people in Hilo consider "dangerous". How many of us actually feel in danger? I certainly don't. I mind my own business and it seems to be live and let live. Yes there have been a couple of murders and one armed hostage situation in Eden Roc in the last few years, but they were almost entirely drug culture or domestic disturbance related. No shooting random strangers. Just like in Canada, I feel no need to carry a firearm in Puna. Maybe a big stick for the occasional dog that is running wild and needs a reminder to show respect, but that's about it (even most of them are all bark, but you want to be ready) I think I'm more in danger from a foot going down a lava crack in my back yard.

4 of the 5 poorest locales in the state are on the Big Island. Three of them are in PUNA. The other, Ocean View. Naturally a lot goes into determining what constitutes poor -- be it #'s of people employed, land values, schools, etc. Where ever there is a congregation of poor, there will be activities associated with poverty. One of them being crime. There is no end in sight my friends. As the State grows increasingly unaffordable to its local residents, many new residents will make Puna home for the foreseeable future. Get a dog...or two. And LOCK your sh** up! Be vigilant.

Most of the violent crime here seems to be local on local crime, some of these families have beefs that go back generations, just ask any cop, they'll tell you. I do wonder how much of the increase in violent crime is because criminals are being shipped to mainland prisons, where they learn how to be real criminals, instead of having them serve their time here.

Movement from Oahu to the BI by professional lowlifes seems to be a trend, we had real winners move next door from Waianae, they paid the deposit and first months rent and then never gave the landlord another cent, it took her almost 2 years to get them out and they destroyed the inside of the house and were probably the source of a mini crime spree in the area, since it ended when they finally left.

Reading the Big Island Thieves FB page was an eye opener, there are a lot of guns being stolen from homes and businesses! The more guns people bring with them when they move here, the more guns there are to get stolen and end up in the hands of criminals.

yeah, seems like a lot of break-ins lately, including in my neighborhood. just kind of a bummer, really. i try to mind my own business. just gotta wonder how long before it's my turn.

I personally don't think I could ever shoot anyone. Perhaps it would be a deterrent, in some ways, if criminals knew that homeowners at least had that option.

I have always felt safe on the BI, even when living in Puna (Waa Waa, right near where Dana was murdered); I feel even more so now that I live Pa'auilo Mauka (I'll admit, crime's a tad lower here). Flying for a Commuter for years, I've lived in a succession of several large cities. Washington DC, Denver, Miami, Atlanta, and Cleveland. I wasn't paid much and owed for College and Flight Training so I lived in the "rougher" areas of all those cities.

The one thing that I found universal in all of them (as well as in Hawaii) is that most Major/Violent crimes, typically happened insularly. Gang on Gang, Lover upon lover, inside the family, amongst drug users.....rarely was an innocent bystander murdered, or targeted. Yes the smaller crimes involved the innocent; Petty (or Grand) Larceny etc......as well as the occasional more major; mugging or rape (though this too usually involves a person the victim knows).

Just my .02.

Also, I for one appreciate our PD. I have brought cookies on several occasions to the Honoka'a PD. Good folks, they deal with the parts of society I, for one, am glad don't have to deal with.

Aloha all,

I saw that many knew Scottie and was pleading with him earlier Tue on other facebook posts to turn himself in once the Wanted bulletin came out naming him as a person of interest in that Honoli'i shooting......

so early last night I did a google search for 'Scottie Yanagawa' just to see if he had a facebook page so I could check out what he says and images etc.... I then found one with his real name 'Scottie Yanagawa' but when I opened it it was a dead page.. so I clicked the back button and saw that there was a link on google search to a LaFamilia Choppa's facebook page just below the one with his name, and I saw the http address had 'Scottie Yanagawa' within the address, then opened it and saw that it was wide open for everyone to see pictures and posts.. within seconds I knew it was his, and then I realized I just saw a post on 'Big Island Thieves' posted with that same unusual 'LaFamilia Choppa' name, went back reread it and then wrote the monitor of 'Big Island Thieves' with the info... by this time he was calling a few people names, and another guy also looked at his pics and put 2 and 2 together too.... a couple of us figured it out roughly the same time independently... soon after this he stopped posting and then about an hour later some witness to the shooting started posting info on the shooting in the parking lot... most of us had a hunch/gut feeling it would be Scottie as he was saying strange 'off' **** in his name calling... he also had a buddie calling names too, but that guy erased all his name calling posts soon after, but Choppa/Scottie left his up....
it was a trip, t but I dont know how the cops knew where he was... I heard they had a few surrounding the parking lot before the shooting even started ...
