money that can't be spent on roads, parks, police, fire department, etc.
That spending was already not a priority. No change.

Japanese Space Based Observatory Update
The Joint Space Operations Center, using a series of ground based telescopes including one in Hawaii (Maui), have determined the space based JAXA Hitomi X-ray observatory has broken into five pieces. Unfortunately as it is in outer space, a repair crew cannot drive to the location to fix the problem as they would on earth:

Perhaps more village's or communities like this one in the article, could be considered here on the big island. Puna has many Subdivisions like Ainaloa and paradise park that are already kept pretty dark.

May not be the TMT, but i love that woman's hobby telescope for only $5,000.

"Gordon Moore is only trying to build TMT in Hawaii because he has a vacation house here."
Really. How utterly absurd.

Five Attitudes
More esoteric are the five attitudes in the partaking of food. These come from the Buddhist faith, and are often posted at restaurants that serve vegetarian temple cuisine. While most modern Japanese cannot recite them, they provide the foundation for the Japanese attitude towards food by cultivating a spirit of gratitude. The following Five Phrases from the book Good Food from a Japanese Temple by Soei Yoneda, former Abbess of the Sanko-in Temple, are uttered in Zen temples before the partaking of food:
- I reflect on the work that brings this food before me; let me see whence this food comes.
- I reflect on my imperfections, on whether I am deserving of this offering of food.
- Let me hold my mind free from preferences and greed.
- I take this food as an effective medicine to keep my body in good health.
- I accept this food so that I will fulfill my task of enlightenment.

The problem with TMT is not Hawaiians. The problem is that anyone of any ethnicity can wrap themselves up in what they cherry pick as Hawaiian culture, and file lawsuits as a 'Hawaiian native'. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit blocking TMT are ethnically as Hawaiian as I am (I am from Mars), yet their 'Hawaiian ethnicity' is the foundation of their legal arguments. It is beyond absurd.

Even IF the TMT is ultimately built here, they should still sue for lost time and expenses. Given a BLNR that can't implement a valid legal process, a circuit judge who can't remand without providing more legal questions than clarity, and a governor who holds no one accountable, there should be consequences, financial and political. Then more people might understand the real costs of having public officials and agencies that are unconscientious, inept, or both.

My legal team is working on ways to apply this to the vast "private" subdivisions; we're actually quite grateful to BLNR and the Courts for creating a way forward.

TMT would be a leader, as in causing a lot of the infrastructure to be put in place, not that it's already there. Or at least I assume it isn't
You're correct dakine, there is no infrastructure at or near the Mt Saraswati site in India. Today a bridge collapsed in Calcutta killing dozens. The NPR report made these two comments:
Poor quality construction
Years behind schedule
That is in one of the major cities in India. Imagine if a cutting edge observatory had to be built in a remote mountainous area, a 10 hour drive from the nearest real town, with no electricity, phone, fiber optic cable, pretty much nothing in place? What would be the cost savings over building it in Hawaii?
