The Other Side
#11
I know the feeling. we have lived here two years now and we havent made the trip yet. We have made it to Waimea several times and thought about going the rest of the way but just couldnt work up the courage. I have $1200.00 in Costco gift cards just sitting around and I cant muster up the desire to go over and use them. I just keep hoping Costco will come to me. Perhaps if we all get together and buy John a big truck we could have him deliver when he makes his numerous escape trips from Kona to Pahoa.

I don't think that Kona Brewing is the best microbrew on the Big Island anyway; from what I have tasted so far, I think that Mehana, brewed in Hilo, is much better (although not quite as readily available, even on this side of the island).

Is the membership to Costco worth a semi annual trip??? I admit the beer at the Kona Brewing Co. was dang good - but it will be quite a while 'fore we make that trek again!

I agree with Howard, I think the Kona Brew Pub is vastly overrated and their pizza sauce is kind of plain. The only beer I drink there is the IPA but I too would prefer Mehana. As to Larry's suggestion, you can buy me a huge truck guys but I won't know how to drive it! SmileSmileSmile

Punacat we can totally relate! We used to go to Oahu for a long weekend and could not wait to get outta dodge..we felt like Wikiwacki was the equivalent of Houston on the Pacific (off by a few million but still congested!) When I go make the Costco run I usually ask friends and neighbors if they need anything and vice-versa. That might be something we can all do in the forum to help each other out. Especially for the less able bodied, super busy, and less patient in crowds members. Best of luck here in paradise. Doesn't it feel kinda like life has been on hold for awhile and now you can come up and breeeeeeeeeethe!!! pj

PJ - I'm still holding my breath, just a little. I've got a little over one more week in PA. There's 2 " of that nasty white stuff sitting outside my window at the moment. But my heart just aches everytime I let my mind drift over there and I start thinking about all that's awaiting me!!!

Howard, does Mehana have a pub there in Hilo?? I'll have to see if I can find me some when I get back there. My hubby is a brew meister, and it will be a little while 'fore the first batch is ready....

Hey - you know, a little homemade beer might be just the ticket for the next Puna Bash!!! Just a thought! Smile

Hey Cat,

There is a shop downtown Hilo that sells beer supplies. It is in a store that sells party stuff like decorations and balloons. The wife runs decoration store and the Hubby sells the beer stuff. Cathie and I met them at a going away potluck for the previous people that sold supplies on the east side and are great people. If you are on the “other side” there is another fellow I can put you in touch with. His “Absolutely Porter” was featured at the Kona Brewpub’s 10th anniversary last February. He talked us into bringing our brewing equipment over with us. I’ll be glad when we get our house build so we can make a batch for a Puna Party.

I didn’t bring the Tongans into any of my messages! But a great Puna Kastoff Ale sounds mighty fine!

Is my halo slipping yet?
