New Restaurant in Keaau, Not great the 1st time!
#21
We enjoyed Mama Lani's for their free pool from 1 in afternoon til 5pm on Wednesdays only.
Even though they only had 3/4 sized tables as we still enjoy playing pool but do not know of any places this side of island with full size tables .

We did...(well...not raced...just moseid.......and.......well.....
The salad was good, nice tasting tomatoes & really crispy cucumbers....

We got there a little after 6pm...no other patrons...
We took food from the first buffet table, that had clam chowder & egg drop soup, Spaghetti, grilled fish & white sauce, fried fish, fried chicken & prime rib...

It was all tepid...not a bit of heat...
I mentioned it to the server...
twice
The second time the manager came out & first checked the SECOND table & reassured me it was hot...I reconfirmed it was the first table...with the soups...
He then noticed that it was not on, turned it on & then stationed the hostess to turn the cold food on the table...
I did question wether this food should be replaced... (& noted not one of them checked the food temp with a thermometer)
Four other couples came in & ate food that had been on that table...at $17.95 each for the buffet

The second buffet table had a combination of Chinese dishes...but, though the table was hot, the surface food was cold (in part because there were so few patrons there was no turnover & the staff was not turning the food over in the trays to keep up the temperature)

The price included drinks (soda & Green Tea)... we asked for HOT tea & that seemed to cause a problem that took over 15 mins... & one trip out to explain they do not have hot tea...

Lunch is $12.95.... not sure if I will ever return to find out if it is different
Too bad, as we do like to have GOOD places to eat that we can walk to in Keaau....

Sounds like typical first night chaos that comes with opening up a new restaurant.
Hopefully they will get it together. It would be sad to see another eatery flop there.
If they are going to have steam tables they need to maintain them closely or they won't get any repeat business.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

I am going to give this new business a chance. It is not easy to open and manage a restaurant, specially at this location, apparently. Many kinks need to be worked out at the beginning, so i will give them a pass if it is not perfect right off the bat. I appreciate someone is trying!!!

1st night chaos is one thing, and perfectly normal, but not keeping cold food cold and hot food hot shows an inability to follow basic food service protocols designed to prevent sickening your patrons. The sickest I have ever been in my life was from eating at a buffet that shortly later was shut down for exactly that problem. Chicken and shellfish absolutely have to be kept at the right temperature or really nasty critters can start growing in the food that make people really sick, especially anyone with a weakened immune system or other health issues.

Every restaurant I worked at, we were required to carry a thermometer and we were required to use it. If we found food outside the "safe zone" we threw it out. From a business perspective it was a lot cheaper than paying medical and funeral expenses. From an ethical perspective, knowingly serving potentially unsafe food is just wrong. I wouldn't eat somewhere that care so little about their customers they are willing to make them sick.

Report to DOH and have them shut down. "Rules are for everyone."

And after you make the call, don't forget to complain to someone that "there are no jobs in Puna."
