EBT dollars at work

Or an employee brought in bags to recycle and forgot to remove THEIR receipt, heaven forbid that some waitress or dishwasher would actually buy produce with their EBT. So if someone buys a mocha with an EBT card they are bad people, and someone else buys produce with an EBT and the bag ends up at a restaurant it means the restaurant must be buying their produce with an ill gotten EBT card. I think some people just spend their lives thinking up ways to feel superior to others.

As far as the original scenario, when I was working 3 jobs and had EBT, I already had a college degree, was often well dressed for one of my jobs, and sometimes borrowed my room mate's nice car. The working poor are not always uneducated, poorly dressed, or less than clean cut. The ascot seems unlikely anywhere, much less in Hawaii, it makes me think the whole story was made up.

dakine - are you so sure that everyone on punaweb that complains of the EBT abuse, isn't using it now, or has needed EBT in the past?

Since hot and or cooked foods are not allowed to be purchased with EBT - perhaps this fellow was going to a job interview or interviews and needed a cup of joe to stay awake.
Did you offer to buy him a cup of coffee and then speak with him ?
Maybe he had borrowed the car so at said job interview he could make a nice impression upon the new perspective employer .
We know two bank tellers at our bank ( BOH ) who receive EBT and they drive nice cars - dress impeccably for their job as bank teller and yet they are on EBT as their house hold expenses that are allowed as a deduction on their EBT and their minimum wage employment qualifies them for EBT . A whopping 37$ a month for one bank teller and a whopping 29 dollars for the other.
The next time you see someone buying a cold coffee with their SNAP card - spend that extra buck or two and buy them a hot coffee .
Compassion goes a long way .

I know from experience that it is cheaper in the long run to make car payments than have a piece of crap that constantly breaks down and becomes a black hole that only sucks up money in repairs.

What a hectic weekend!

Businesses to boycott in Pahoa.
Banks in dire need of our collective attention for allowing squatters in their vacant properties.
Shantytown subdivisions that we can only hope Pele will deal with, but if not, it might best be left up to us anyway. Time permitting.

And now, on top of all of that, it's "National One Guy In Front Of Me In The Checkout Line Buying One Expensive Item On An EBT Card Weekend." Has another year gone by already?

So... I haven't yet seen any listings over on Puna Events with the schedule for citizen mobs and night marches, but I want to be ready. Unfortunately, everyone seems to have gotten the jump on me as all the farm supply stores I frequent are sold out of pitchforks, torches & kerosene. Anyone know where they might still be available? Only from a business we're not boycotting of course.

That EBT card will not check him into a kona resort. The EBT card won't pay for him to dine at gumps or king Kam's Buffet. His EBT card won't cover his 3-D movie or round of golf. His EBT card won't cover any Bar Tabs or drinky drinkies like our mayors card CAN. So why pick on this guy or anyone for using the EBT card for what it was intended for? Sorry I find this insensitive.

The Hawaiian islands offer a wonderful variety of fun and exciting things to do for those who are not on EBT, homeless, or under the age of 18,jmo.

KJ, I know it must be hard on you to have reached the golden ages where everything has to be written down on lists for you to remember them. Maybe try Simplifying or prioritising the little time you may have left KJ, If you must make a list then stick to your bucket list.

The card was never intended to enable people to buy steaks, lobster, fancy iced coffees, candy, chips, sodas...

If it wasn't those items would not be allowed, or purchases would be tightly controlled like the WIC program, where only specific foods in specific sizes are purchased using vouchers. Or convenience stores wouldn't be allowed to take them. But as long as the rules are written the way they are, people should not be harassed or judged for what they do as long as they stay inside the rules. If you think the rules should be different, write the Ag department and Congress, but lay off the judgmental holier than thou BS about people you do not know and whose circumstances you do not understand.

Everyone I know who overcame poverty does not begrudge the help poor people get with our tax dollars. Not everyone always makes great choices, but someone being on EBT should be able to walk into a store and use what their card to buy what they need at that moment within the EBRT rules without a bunch of hard hearted judgmental d*cks running to social media in an attempt to shame them. You all have no idea what that person's circumstances were, you just want a chance to put someone else down and make yourself feel big.

For real? And you know this how?
Exactly dakine, we don't even know what brand this guy bought, or how much he paid.

The original post says:
Saw someone today buy a canned mocha drink with an EBT card at the Safeway gas store.

Are we talking about one of those cheap $1.00 Japanese coffee drinks in a can? It doesn't say "bottled" which would imply a $3.50 Starbucks drink. I think that's what most people here assume.

How much did the canned drink cost EightFingers?
