HOTPE, the drink was $3 and something.
About corporate welfare, I totally agree. The offshoring of corporate earnings needs to stop. They should play by the same rules we do and pay their share.

The taxes I pay help fund SNAP. I would rather that money went to feed hungry families and not pay for luxury foods I can't afford.

If only we were as outraged about "protectors" derailing the economic base that creates the tax revenue that funds the EBT...

Dare I suggest that some people are receiving EBT when they shouldn't be?

On the other hand many people who could be getting EBT are perhaps too proud to receive it, or the application process is too difficult.
They should try to increase EBT use here for those that deserve it.

Some people receive property tax breaks to which they are not entitled.

Some people are not prosecuted for the laws they have broken.

The rest of us pay extra to "subsidize" these "freeloaders".

Same as it ever was.

You may suggest it, and you would be right.
All programs have a certain number of people who will take advantage of the qualifying requirements, or hope they will slip through the cracks.

- Do we dismantle the military because somebody paid $500 for a hammer?
- Do we find a new mayor when the current mayor makes personal purchases on the taxpayer's dime, or even after the total reaches 310,000 dimes?

If there is an EBT program, somebody is going to walk into a store and buy lobster. Is that an abuse of the system? Certainly. But 99% of the people with an EBT Card will buy chicken. On sale whenever possible.

When did steak and lobster become luxury items anyway..steak has been an American staple since day one.. and lobster is a bug that scavenges the ocean bottom much like a cockroach. Are cockroaches a luxury food item too?

I find this an interesting topic.

I'm 100% for helping the needy and do not begrudge anyone receiving EBT.

I do however have a couple questions.

1. Does Hawaii have any restrictions on what can be purchased with the card? Many States restrict the purchase of sugary items. This is to help protect the health of those whom are down on their luck and in poverty.

2. Why is the price of food on BI so high? It's rural Hawaii with a ton of agricultural land in use?
Here on the mainland
a loaf of bread is 1.29-1.69
a pineapple is 2.49
tomatoes are .69c per lb
5lb of onions are 4.99
10lb of potatoes are 3.99
Head of lettuce is .99 per
Sweet potatoes are .49-.69 per lb
broccoli .99 per head.
etc, etc,etc.....

It seems as though the spirit of Aloha is lacking and one of greed prevails.

I'm currently living in the suburbs of a large metropolitan city We do not have farmland that is close, everything is trucked and flown in from around the world.

There is no competition in hauling freight from the distribution points on the left coast.. would be my guess.

Alaska prices were less than Hawaii for some reason in the south central area anyway. Milk two gallons for 6 dollars.. etc..

It is shipped from Seattle then trucked over 300 miles in my old community .

Milk here is a luxury item.. IMO
