Going through a 1920 copy of Paradise of the Pacific (predecessor of Honolulu Magazine) yesterday, I got a kick out of this ad from Henry May & Co of HNL:
"Take home with you one of May's Aloha Packages, or have us send it to one of your friends on the Mainland. The ALOHA package contains: 1 jar Poha jam; 1 jar Guava jam; 1 jar Guava jelly, Red; 1 jar Mango chutney; 1 jar Papala and Pineappe Marmalade; 1 package Mayflower Old Kona Coffee, 2 lbs.; 1 jar Poha jelly. All are packed securely in a neat box, ready for express to any part of the United States. Price: $3.50"
Anyone can tell me what Papala is?
BTW, I have many, many magazines that I'd love to recycle, mostly news weeklies but also nature quarterlies, etc. I used them lots in the classroom for students creating various projects and offer them up to teachers or anyone who wants them as I hate throwing them in the dump. I've already taken many to the Keaau recycling but those usually end up in the dump. Jes email me if you want any of them.
